Jhoutaioan Slime Mold

Slime Molds are ideomotoric, polymorphic creatures which evolved in symbiosis with a variety of coral molds. They are colonial organisms composed of specialized sub-organs, which they can share between bodies.

A shimmering, rippling mass of translucent tissue and glistening mineral shards, the creature scurries towards you with startling speed. Each throb propels it forward in staggering bursts of violence. It hunts not by sight or sound, but by the heat of lungs and the bloom of exhaled breath.

Physiology

Oh yes, melon slime grew everywhere back home!

You couldn't leave a glass of juice out without coming back later to find a little blue slimeball squished down into the cup. I loved to watch the little spores darting around under the hyacinth leaves, hunting for larva and tadpoles.

Organs and Traits

Neurovascular Core

This structure acts as the mold's brain and is stored deep within the gel, where it is protected by acidic folds. It is radially symmetrical, with photosensitive rings, and pulsing nutrient channels. It governs the rest of the organs and stores environmental memory.

Photoreceptors

Simple light-detecting rhopalium embedded across the skin, allowing the mold to detect changes in brightness, movement, or shadows. These eye-spots flash when hit with light, and are stored within the body during movement, but may periscope out while still.

Phermoptic Mantle

A mucus-soaked membrane around the pseudopod laced with cilia and nerve clusters, reading heat, breath, and chemical traces like script.

Abilities

Body heat (IR): (~6-10 Spaces) Can track vague warm shapes and lingering heat trails.

Breath vapor (CO₂): (~1-3 Spaces)

Phermoptics: Smell pheromones and chemicals in the air -- the tinge of fear in sweat, the indolic stink of rot, the smell of rain.

Musculogel Pseudopod

The bulk of the slime's mass. A semi-permeable membrane layered with bands of muscle fiber and filled with pressurized gel. Contracts and relaxes in hydraulic pulsations to run, leap, climb, and contort around obstacles.

Abilities

Pressurize: Play any number of Royals to add as much power to your next action.

Harden: For each Royal played with this ability, raise armor by 5.

Grapple: Shoot a pseudopod out in a straight line, attach to a target, and pull. Default UBS Power is 2. Difficulty is 1 per space. On a success you are pulled/snapped towards the Target and may be choose to enter Grapple with it.

Acid Sacks

Produces and stores the corrosive enzymes used to dissolve prey or carve through limestone. Distributed along inner surfaces of pseudopod folds.

Abilities

Enzyme Jet: Play a Royal and make a Precision Check: Shoot a stream of acid at a Target. WIP

Shard Cysts

Encysted shards of bone, rock, glass, or metal which may be pressurized to burst through the outer membrane.

Abilities

Encyst Object: As a Partial Action, Absorb an object smaller than your slime mass.

Eject Object: As a Precision Check, eject an object with force.

Mycomass Garden

Hosts the colonies of coral fungus which modulate the mold’s behavior and grant it specific traits. It is visible as veiny root networks or blooming caps growing inside or on the mold.

Abilities

Spore Haze: Play a Royal, A haze of spores fills all adjacent spaces, dealing any mold effects and preventing breathing inside of the cloud without a respirator.

Core Polyp

Polyps grow directly from the core and may produce any other organ. The process leaves the slime vulnerable, and so is usually done only by dedicated cores in the Pool.

Abilities

Create Polyp: Dedicate a core to creating any other slime organ.

Life Cycle

Spore Phase

Spores may remain viable for centuries in dry or cold conditions and are highly resistant to chemical sterilization. They are activated by a combination of organic residue, warmth, humidity, at which point they develop a mycelial web and begin consuming material.

Plasmid Phase

The slime enters its motile phase as a semi-cohesive, amoebic, plasmid mass capable of osmotic movement and simple behavior. It avoids threats and scavenges for food as it begins fusing with its mold strains.

Colonid Phase

Once enough biomass is acquired, the plasmid begins to develop its secondary organs and begin to hunt live prey. At this phase it begins to reproduce through spores and osmosis.

Forms

As a slime colony becomes entrenched into a nest and forms a Slime Pool, the cores begin to separate and complete multiple tasks at once. Cores within the pool keep time on how long other cores are gone, what their purpose was, and what resources are available, and will then send the healthiest cores out to continue its goals.

The more cores it has, the more bodies and tasks it can juggle at once. It will typically keep around a fifth of its body mass safe in the pool, using those collected cores to make complex decisions.

Gestalt Pool
A nutrient slurry in which the cores are reinvigorated and coordinate to make plans.
Sentry
Found spread thin over ceilings and tucked into crannies. This body has an increased amount of sensory receptors and will click to to the rest of the organism if it sees prey or predator.
Courier
The smallest possible unit of slime. A single core and enough psuedopods deployed for the sole purpose of relieving another core. Common and numerous within the nest. The slime is more likely to send a properly equipped Scout
Scout
Mostly focused on movement, like a courier, but with some defenses tailored to their environment.
Soldier
A large swarm densely armed with steel-melting acids, a skeleton cobbled together from choice tools and weapons, and carpeted in sporing mycomass which blots your eyes and fills your throat.
Hunter
Lean ambush predators in a configuration tailored to their local prey.
Reaper
Hunters are assembled and deployed directly from the Mother Pool. Moving in every direction, especially towards you. A rippling mass of musculogel
Exploder
Filled with acid, ready to ambush and self-rupture to shower targets in acid. Serves as a mine field to protect the Pool.

I love slime molds! I definitely think I would end up with some slime mold wetware if I was in Ethnis. I enjoyed reading about the different abilities.
