Dungeoneers

Dungeoneers are an essential part of any large military operation in Eshor. Usually hiring from experienced Adventurers, they are experts in charting dungeons and pacifying monsters, tasks that are often too much for regular footsoldiers. They specialize in small unit tactics, typically operating in 4-6 soldier parties that coordinate with at least two other parties as well as escorting specialist non-combatants if needed, like escorting a cartographer through a dungeon, allowing them to draft a chart of the dungeon for use in future maneuvers.

Composition

Tactics

Dungeoneers work in small teams to efficiently explore and clear dungeons (any enclosed space potentially inhabited by monsters), as well as defending an army on the march from monstrous threats that regular soldiers can't be expected to face in battle. Typically they break into small teams, spreading out through dungeons, exploring and dispatching threats, while staying in contact with each other by sending runners through cleared sections of the dungeon. When one group encounters a threat they can't handle alone, they fight a holding action while calling for reinforcements from other groups, then overwhelm the threat as a larger group.   Each team typically employs at least two specialists in martial combat and one mage providing magical support. Often these groups are adventuring parties that have opted for the more structured life of the military, and have long years of experience working together to defeat unexpected foes. Combined with their military training, they are a formidable force capable of overcoming all but the most powerful monsters. However, a handful of creatures, such as Elder Dragons, they are specifically taught not to provoke, as there are some fights where even for a specialist team, discretion is the better part of valour.

Training

Drawing from an already experienced population by recruiting adventurers, dungeoneers undergo an intensive 6-month training regimen that combines both physical training and academic learning.   The physical training is a strict regimen of daily runs carrying full military gear including armour, as well as weapons training. For adventurers whose focus is primarily on the arcane side of combat, this is meant to bring them up to an acceptable level of fighting fitness. For those who already excel in their martial skills, these are far more intense training sessions intended to bring out the very best of their skills.   Aditionally, all dungeoneers study lore on monsters and the environments they inhabit. This includes both habitat information, allowing dungeoneers to predict what sort of situation they might be walking into, as well as combat tactics proven effective against each monster.
