Catriona Redmane

Catriona was born to Duke Tharan Redmane and Evora Redmane, née Gruntail in Hawkspeak Castle, an ancient Redmane family residence that commands the two hills overlooking Shaleport, the capital of Bannesfield. She is her parents' middle child, having an older brother Brian Redmane and a younger sister, Felicity Redmane. Catriona was a precocious child, excelling at her studies and receiving constant praise from her many tutors. Sorcery runs strong in the Redmane bloodline, marked by heads full of bright red hair, and even at an early age, Catriona proved extremely capable. Tharan Redmane was also gifted a gifted sorcerer and taught Catriona everything he could. Catriona was a quick study, picking up the arcane just as easily as she had her more mundane lessons. This dedication to the magical and Courtly arts greatly endeared Catriona to her father. He doted on all of his children, but especially on Catriona, and they were very close up until his murder years later.   While Catriona's sorcery was a spot of pride for the family, Catriona was gifted in other ways: she is both extremely intelligent and beautiful. These make her highly desired in arranged marriages, and she certainly would have been married years ago if her father hadn't been killed. To date, Catriona has spurned a dozen suitors, but that hasn't stopped men from trying. This has given rise to all sorts of rumors about her love life and sexuality. Catriona is known to have had lovers in the past, and some few whisper of the peculiarly close relationship she has with her handmaiden and distant cousin, Ansley Greenwood. The truth of the matter is both more and less, scandalous than people expect. Catriona has accepted marriage as a political necessity; she needs an heir, but she has specific criteria that must be filled before she accepts any proposal, one of which is that what happens in her bedchamber is entirely her business, and no one else's.   As most people with magical ability are required to do, Catriona joined the Imperial Mage Guild when she turned fifteen. Ever since she has dedicated much of her time to its service, moving quickly through the ranks and prestigious appointments the whole time. Now she finds herself a Lumen, who are magical inquisitors; powerful casters charged with rooting out illegal magic throughout the Empire. She's newly appointed to this small cabal, but only the most powerful and connected casters are even considered, but most importantly to Catriona, it's the perfect opportunity to build her social, and political network to leverage later in her career.   Catriona is ambitious to a fault. She regularly, and easily manipulates others for her benefit. While she doesn't betray allies, she is almost certainly gaining more than she's giving up when she helps them. Furthermore, Catriona largely believes the ends justify the means, and if Catriona thinks she can get away with it, murder is a perfectly viable solution to some problems. Her personal power aside, the Redmane family is one of the preeminent families in the Empire. So, being able to call on her for assistance is a powerful asset when dealing with Courtly rivals. Catriona can singlehandedly turn an entire city upside down over a rumor. To say nothing of the Arbor Company's economic reach across the Empire.   Catriona's father was murdered by cultists as he investigated their hiding in the Aura Desert. His death was a powerful blow to Catriona and she spent months in mourning at Hawkspeak, her childhood home. Since emerging from mourning Catriona was said to have found a renewed purpose and focus. The Duchess spends considerable time and effort in the region trying to bring her father's killers to justice, but so far all her leads have run cold.   A week after Catriona ended her mourning and returned to Courtly life and her duties as a Lumen, her brother Brian abdicated the duchy, turning everything over to his sister. The move was sudden, but not entirely surprising as many had thought over the years that Catriona would be named Tharan's heir while her brother would assume command of the Coursers.

Evony was educated by the finest tutors at Hawkspeak and again by prominent sorcerers with the Imperial Mage guild.

Founded Tharan Hall, a society dedicated to furthering the magical arts specifically among sorcerers in honor of her father.

Evony is exceptionally smart, and ambitious. She uses her "full toolbox" of weapons to get her way; anything short of breaking the law, unless she thinks she can get away with it, and then law breaking is well on the table.   That is not to say Evony is a bad person. She genuinely believes in her rights as a noble, but even more she believes in the duties. It is Evony's duty to make her people prosperous and safe. She enjoys the power and prestige that comes with being a Duchess and a Lumen, but even more she loves doing good works with them.
