Seigneur du Charte
A Seigneur du Charte is a member of the collegiate body running the Princely Company of Arlesia. Deputed by the Company's benefactors and investors, the Seigneurs du Charte or Lords of the Charter are given the formal approbation of the Arlesian Crown to manage the effects put at the Company's disposal by its investors. Potent magnates of the increasingly prosperous nation, the Seigneurs du Charte are often elevated to the nobility and influentail in government circles, reputedly having the ear of Vilire Chalesien and Prince Nicholas II Manchevieux himself.
Appointment
There are usually seven Seigneurs du Charte. When a vacancy arises, the Seigneurs meet as a body to propose a replacement to the deputies of the benefactors and investors of the Company, presenting the elected individual to the Crown for approbation as dictated by the Company's charter. The Crown is considered very influential in who is appointed to serve, but otherwise keeps its distance.
Duties
The Seigneurs du Charte, as a body, set the direction of and manage the Princely Company. Their chief aim is to get a return on the considerable investments of wealthy Arlesians and the Arlesian Crown. Occasionally, Arlesian political interests are presumed to intertwine with business.
Responsibilities
There is a division of responsibilities among the Seigneurs du Charte.
Benefits
The Seigneurs du Charte get paid a "seventh penny", by which one seventh of the Company's profits after paying its duties to the Crown goes to the Seigneurs.
