The Settlement
The Settlement is the village of changelings on the Pyre Peninsula. They are an insular community, only dealing with outsiders that come to them. The Settlement is not a welcoming place; there is no inn or any other infrastructure for visitors. Instead, a cleared field is provided for traveling merchants to set up on during their stay.
The Settlement only allows the changelings who are born there to live in their community. They are psychically connected and work as a hivemind, doing what is best for the group at all times. They only deal with outsiders for trade because it benefits the community; otherwise they would not even do that at all.
The Settlement is largely self-sufficient. They farm on a small scale, and they also hunt, gather, and fish in order to support the community. Everything that is obtained is used completely; The Settlement wastes as little as possible.
While each citizen of The Settlement is a different person, due to their psychic connection the individuals that live here work together as a single unit. Each citizen knows how to do each job due to the shared information within the group; however, some individuals are better at certain things than others, and therefore usually take the jobs that lend themselves to the individual's physical and mental capabilities. An individual will choose a form that suits their task, and can switch forms at will due to the loose, formless clothing that everyone in The Settlement wears.
The Settlement takes care to sustain themselves, but this is a subconscious directive. If the crops fail, individuals are driven to hunt and fish more; if individuals die, others feel compelled to find a mate and produce offspring. Much of what those born into The Settlement do is not actively decided; rather, the hivemind notices needs and the individuals fill the need.
Demographics
100% changeling. No others are welcome.
Government
There is no government. The Hivemind is always in agreement.
Industry & Trade
The main trade good that comes out of The Settlement is Beauty Salve . When traders arrive, the The Settlement takes stock of their stores and will sell off surplus items, especially ones that will not keep or that they do not have room for. This stock is taken quickly and easily due to the connected nature of the community.
Infrastructure
Dorm-style housing has been constructed for personal space and recreation. In addition, there is housing specifically for rearing children. Other infrastructure includes a town square, a smith with a furnace, other buildings for making trade goods, such as leatherworking, barns and pens for animals and beasts of burden, a bridge to cross one of the rivers to the southwest, and cellars to hold food goods. There is a communal kitchen to feed the masses; therefore there are no kitchens in the dorms.
Architecture
Buildings are basic but functional and sturdy. All buildings are made of wood cleared from the surrounding area- mostly of the oak nearby. Shingles are carved from wood as well. No paint is used; everything is the color of the wood. The only alterations to the wood is to seal and protect it.
Geography
The Settlement has access to fresh water via a river that runs nearby and the lake said river feeds into. All wells in this area have failed due to the close proximity of the ocean. A small mountain range blocks the rest of the land mass from the peninsula, but the remainder of the peninsula is relatively flat, ending in cliffs.
Natural Resources
The area is heavily forested. A small part of the land is farmed; the woods provide hunting and gathering opportunities. Settlers fish with nets and poles both at the river and at the coast.
