The Gravehall (Toft)

Purpose / Function

  • Originally, building now known as the Gravehall was built as a place to keep the dead for viewing and for funeral rights before burial or cremation. At the time, it was a white building, made of marble from the nearby mountains. It had a single entrance that was always open and there was a soft internal glow from a persistent spell placed on the ceiling of the structure.
  • The building (at that time known as “The Viewing Room”) was built shortly after the graveyard itself was built to accommodate the needs of citizens in the city.
  • Some time after, about 700 BB, the Mortis took the building over. It was a relatively simple takeover, all they did was shut the door, change the locks, and refuse to let anyone in. The Council was unhappy about it, but the Guild leader at the time stubbornly refused to return the building. After a single attempt to evict them by force, which failed utterly, they couldn’t really do anything and just let them keep it. A new public viewing area was built a good distance away, and life went on.

Alterations

  • After taking the building over, the guild used magic to blacken the outside. A good number of the mages in Toft at the time weren’t even sure how they did it. Beyond that, they changed the door for a sturdier, heavy metal one and that is the last external change that could be noticed.
  • It is unknown what alterations they made to the inside, since they won’t allow anyone in except for guild members. What little is known through rumor and leaked information is that they have built an extensive underground “lair” that extends under the graveyard but also to areas under Toft proper. These extensions were exposed during the Arnora Thok incident, and the Council has forbid the creation of new tunnels or rooms under the city by the guild. No one can be sure they are following the new decree, but the Council seems content.

Architecture

  • None really. It is a solitary black cube, with only a single black door to enter. The black is not particularly matte, but not glossy either. The roof on the cube is very short, only so that water doesn’t pool on the top.
  • The roof of the Gravehall is Blue-Black
