Moric Kariss is born to carpenter parents Tilood Nailbatter Kariss and Gailu Chopper Kariss in a small woodworking village on the peninsula of Birmingver.
The town of Thundertree is destroyed in a mysterious fire and more than 100 people are killed. Twisted monsters flooded the area immediately after the fire and killed those trying to return. The ruins have been abandoned ever since.
Adventurous souls from Ilvern cross the Annuremyn and settle Caeldun, which had lain abandoned since the destruction of the Strife of the Scions and the raiders that swarmed the region. Within a short time, the gold and valuable hides that can be found here cause it to grow into a bustling frontier village once more.
Althea Meliamne, Levin Greycastle and Moric Thax Sparkleswap Cogger Kariss depart Westpoint escorting a wagon of goods to Barthen's Provisions in Caeldun. Their employer Gundren Rockseeker was impatient to reach Caeldun and left a day earlier in the company of the seasoned warrior Sildar Halwinter. The three had been hired by Gundren separately and introduced to each other on the day of his departure.
Guided by Bahamut, the clanless dragonborn Dmaarkev reaches Caeldun and awaits a sign of his purpose here. Running short on money, he offers to help out in the inn in exchange for a discount.
The Druid Myalo is captured by the Redbrand ruffians half a day northeast of Caeldun as she investigates the area.
The tabaxi Vhir, a draconologist from the eastern continent of Sirazu, arrives in Westpoint. He prepares for his mission in the region as a traveling researcher for the Clearsight College of Túculao.
The adventure begins with Althea Meliamne, Levin Greycastle and Moric “Thax” “Shiftgear” “Cogger” Kariss on the last day of their journey from Westpoint to Caeldun.
The adventurers are ambushed by goblins but defeat them and discover the trail to their hideout in a cave in the foothills of the Daudrvell. They infiltrate it, manage to kill most of the goblins and save Sildar Hallwinter, the companion of Gundren Rockseeker.
Reaching Caeldun, the party delivered its goods and sought out the inn "The Sleepy Squirrel" where they met the barkeep Charlie Dillon and the blue dragonborn Dmaarkev, an old associate/victim of Levin. After an evening of revelry he joined the party to replenish his funds and keep an eye on Levin.
After speaking to retired adventurer Daran Edermath the party went to investigate the hideout of the Redbrand ruffians in a bid to help the townspeople of Caeldun. After a series of harrowing battles, they discovered the wizard ringleader Glasstaf had escaped.
While in the cellars of Tressendar Manor the party discovered a captive Myalo and the Dendrar family and freed them from their captors.
The party regrouped at the house of Daran Edermath for a meal and then decided to go confront the last remaining Redbrands at their usual hangout: the Drunken Giant taphouse. The forewarned ruffians defeated and kidnapped them, bringing them to a clearing in the woods where the wizard Glasstaf waited.
The captured party managed to remove their bindings in the night and defeated their kidnappers, capturing Glasstaf. Only one ruffian escaped their fury.
At Caeldun's town hall the party turned in Glasstaf, who was revealed to be the missing wizard Iarno Albrek whom Sildar Halwinter had come to search for. An investigation was started by the townmaster Harbin Wester and Sildar, who revealed himself to be a Crownshield. Enough evidence was provided by the party to warrant the arrest of Iarno Albrek, and they were rewarded for removing the threat of the Redbrands. A tense discussion occurred between Thax and Sildar regarding Sildar's intentions, the safety of the citizens of Caeldun and the question if their losses would be compensated.
Althea and Charlie spend the evening and night together.
Searching rumours of dragons, the tabaxi researcher arrives in Trafinn and discovers a group of secretive people in the village which seem fascinated with them.
At the town meeting on this Lawday Sildar Halwinter officially established his credentials as a Crownshield and the new bailiff for Caeldun, appointed by order of the King. He then proposed the formation of a town militia, while the Townmaster started the process to collect claims on compensation for damages caused by the Redbrands. Moric Kariss privately expressed his doubts about Sildar's ability to be an efficient bailiff to three members of the village.
While traveling the trail east of Caeldun, the party was ambushed by eight goblins and fought for their lives, killing four goblins and routing the rest. Thax's tactics during the fight caused a forest fire which they had to flee, backtracking and getting caught in a heavy storm.
The adventurers reach the ancient elven watchtower of Forntir and discover the necromancer Almena Kost from the Imperioria Obregon has taken residence here. After a tense discussion hostilities break out and Kost as well as her zombies are defeated.
Althea tries advanced magic on the card she found earlier that evening and suffers a magical accident. The Vizier card is discovered by Myalo and now shows an image of Althea. Convinced it is too dangerous to keep, Thax nearly drowns in the well of the tower while trying to hide the card. Almena Kost escapes in the early hours of the morning.
While tracking Almena Kost the remaining party loses her trail and enters the territory of a phase spider. They manage to defeat it and find the body of a dwarven adventurer.
Having left the trail again to go south in search of Cragmaw castle, the party first gets lost and then tries to circumvent the mountain. Near the evening they stumble into the lair of a basilisk. In a deadly battle, Thax is turned to stone and Dmaarkev falls.
Levin and Thax are stunned when a robin approaches Myalo befor their departure and speaks with her, to which she replies. Later she preforms a ritual and sends an additional message by speaking to a bird.
Distraught and down two allies, Levin, Myalo and Thax return to Caeldun and inform Sildar Hallwinter of their experiences in the wilderness. Myalo and Thax still keep the fate of Althea to themselves.
The remaining members of the party convene again with Sildar Halwinter and Townmaster Harbin Wester. They are asked by Sildar to aid him in securing the region. He expresses concern about the presence of an orc war band at Wyvernstein and tasks them with the continued search for Gundren Rockseeker. Sildar offers Levin to train him further in the sword as a way to prepare for the wilderness and urges Myalo and Thax to prepare themselves as well.
A series of curious messages from an unknown sender finds its way to the party. They claim that they can help with the situation Althea is in and that they are not sent by Halia Thornton.
Vhir follows the group of dragon cultists for a week on their journey north to the location of a dragon in Thundertree. He hides in the trees surrounding the village in order to try and study the dragon over the course of the next days.
Levin, Myalo and Thax leave Caeldun and head west to Thundertree, where they hope to find the druid Reidoth and gain access to his knowledge of the region. At dusk they spot a frost giant on the spurs of the Daudrvell.
After another strange message Myalo leads the party to a hidden cache of supplies. Cutting across country, they nearly reach Thundertree and spend an uneasy night in the eerily vibrant forest.
The three enter Thundertree the next day and are immediately attacked on all sides by plant monsters and ash zombies. They press on and continue investigating houses.
The party finds the druid Reidoth whom they had been looking for. He warns them of a nearby green dragon but proves to be weary and mistrustful. He asks the group to chase the dragon away but his own inaction rankles Thax and Levin. The conversation devolves into a series of insulting questions by them and Reidoth kicks them out before they can ask their real questions.
After finding Mirna Dendrar's necklace the trio continues exploring and Thax is suddenly grabbed while investigating a boarded up house. A short battle ensues with the black-cloaked individuals inside, escalated when a third party arrives in the form of Vhir rushing in and displaying his martial prowess. With Thax held hostage a brief negotiation is called by the leader of the cloaked strangers.
The party is not interested in talking to the dragon with them and all three factions go their separate ways again.
The party retreats to the smithy and tries to sleep, silently followed by Vhir, who is curious about these newcomers and listens in on their conversations. Some hours later the dragon returns and Vhir manages to remain undetected while following a delegation of the cultists. They offer a tribute to the dragon outside his tower and quickly leave, trying to appease him for future interactions.
Vhir decides to ally with the trio and introduces himself. Together he and Myalo manage to talk to Reidoth and get some information as well as a map from him. Heeding Vhir's experiences in the village and Reidoth's grim warnings, the group swiftly starts to leave Thundertree
Malevasurrfel intervenes before the party can leave his domain and insists on hosting them. The cultists try to pass the party off as a sacrifice to the dragon, who amusedly makes the two groups fight to see which is worthy of his attention. During this battle a severely drained Althea suddenly reappears and is stabilised by Myalo. Vhir swiftly kills the cultist's leader and Malevasurrfel eats the rest when they flee.
After a tricky conversation the party agrees to kill the druid Reidoth, whom Malevasurrfel suspects of being an agent for another dragon.
Thax enters an unknown blood ritual with the dragon to seal this deal.
Aiming to chase him away the party tries to talk with Reidoth, who denies them entry and repeats his warnings. Vhir tricks him into opening the door, provoking the wrath of the druid. In the following fight Reidoth sustains deadly wounds. When Myalo heals him to prevent his death he gains consciousness, wildshapes and escapes through a hole in the wall, right into the poisonous breath of the dragon who had invisibly followed them.
Reunited and with a new ally in Vhir the party leaves Thundertree, unsure of their actions there and having spent a dismal night filled with macabre sounds in the village around them.
Thax has a last conversation with Malevasurrfel to inform him of their departure.
The adventurers head back to Caeldun and are surprised late in the day by the appearance of a wounded centaur chased by many orcs. Coming to the rescue, the party manages to kill his assailants. Aglamir Swiftstorm tells them that the Dewshine plains to the north are on the brink of war and gifts the group one of his arrows as a token of his respect and trust before continuing his retreat back home.
During the night the winter eladrin Dínenin with her two displacer beasts attacks the camping party and attempts to abduct Althea. A desperate fight follows. With most everyone unconscious and dying, Thax uses an unidentified scroll and kills the huntress with a Fireball spell.
The group returns to Caeldun and finds its people changed. Nasty rumours about them have spread and a part of the population no longer trusts them. Sildar Halwinter speaks of hunters found dead and asks the party if they could go gather intelligence on the orc's movement and numbers, but warns that they should prepare first.
The party spends four days in Caeldun, training and researching to improve their abilities. In this time they visit the Lionshield Coster and learn that the trade network is interested in buying magical items and will pay large prices.
Vhir has several short interactions with Halia Thornton and asks her for information on dragons in the kingdom. In turn she wants the same on Penntor Castle, and warns him that some of his new allies have dangerous enemies and chequered pasts.
The group convenes after a new mysterious note appears in the hayloft where Levin and Thax are sleeping. Thinking Charlie Dillon is the most likely sender, Althea talks to him late that night at the bar. A converstion of subtleties and subtext ensues, and Charlie acts strangely when Althea tells him what really happened when she did not come back last time. In the end, neither fully trusts the other anymore.
Levin becomes a provisional member of the Crownshields and takes their oath in front of several witnesses, ratified by Sildar Halwinter.
While leaving Caeldun the party meets and is given a blessing by Sister Garaele, cleric of Chauntea. She asks them to visited the banshee Agatha, who would not appear for her, and ask a question.
Charlie speaks alone with Althea and openly shows that he is more than an average innkeeper when he warns her very strongly about the Vizier card - which according to him comes from a Deck of Many Things.
Near the evening, the party encounters three dead orcs on the road and are swiftly attacked by hobgoblins who were looking for them. Their coördinated attacks critically wound several of the adventurers, but in the end the hobgoblins are forced to retreat.
Autumnreaper Mirani Longstone Glumluner Hesnoa Dolrabars makes contact with Myalo in person. They exchange information and agree to meet at the next Ilduglisten in the Darkwood.
The party venture off the road once more and discover traces of dwarven civilisation. A fortified camping place, a fallen tower and a long since disused road lead them to the scattered, shattered outer defences of Castle Penntor and the broken towers of its keep.
While scouting the castle and its surroundings the party meet Rurana Pennrich, dwarven paladin of Moradin whose clan once built Penntor and gave Penndaire its name. A cautious alliance is made.
An attempt to enter the main gates covertly fails partway when Rurana is spotted and fighting breaks out with goblinoids from the adjoining towers mustering to defend the entrance hall. The allies stand their ground and manage to kill all who rushed in.
The party discovers a supply room with Sildar's sword and shield as well as the now bloody robes previously worn by necromancer Almena Kost. They are then attacked by the cook and his underlings and continue to explore a darkened chapel hallway with a wormlike denizen. After clearing the chapel of goblins, Rurana Pennrich reveals the secret family crypt. There they help her solve the locking puzzle, and she retrieves the heirloom Humfadretz from the vault.
Fighting hobgoblin guards through narrow hallways, the party arrive at the king's tower. After a short but tense standoff with Grol the fight breaks out again. The bugbear king is assisted by a drow elf, but the party prevail. After she is killed the body of the drow quiriously morphs into a blue-skinned, undefined approximation of a humanoid body.
Exhausted, the party spends the rest of the day and night at Penntor castle. During the night Vhir sneaks off to unknown business for a while. Around midnight, Rurana goes to investigate a sound and is attacked by a returning warband of hobgoblins. These are swiftly dealt with after the rest of the party wakes up. Awake, they decide to free the owlbear they discovered earlier and discover a chest with treasure in the tower that held the beast.
After travelling back to the road, the party meets a lone halfling on the road. This turns out to be Stefaan Helderbeek, a cheerful merchant from Westpoint who seems unconcerned about the dangers of the road, but nevertheless decides to travel with them after hearing the party's warnings of orks.
At noon, the party find a cave entrance with a lone ork guard when scouting the Wyvernstein. When they continue to Caeldun to share this information, Myalo notices that a warband has gone the same way not hours before them. Realizing that an attack on Caeldun is imminent, they try to catch up to the orks but fail to remain unnoticed. The orks and ogre ambush them, demanding surrender. All sides attack when the party refuses and Rurana is seized by an uncontollable rage which causes her to attack everyone.
The party returns to Caeldun, having achieved all they set out to do. Rurana, Stefaan and Gundren are welcomed by Sildar Halwinter. Our main party goes with Sildar through the busteling town and has a debriefing meeting at town hall. before heading to the Sleepy Squirrel to celebrate. A drinking competition quickly ensues.
Making it inside in a moment of quick thinking, a poisoned and bleeding Myalo is immediately noticed by Charlie Dillon, who warns the rest of the party. Avoiding setting of a panick, they go outside to face the highly dangerous attacks of the fleeing assasin. With Levin unconscious and Myalo and Vhir heavily wounded it seems she will get away. Charlie then intervenes with a display of magic that shocks Vhir and Althea, who are close enough to see it. The poisoner engages Charlie while trying to get away, but in the end he proves more powerfull, takes her down, and slits her throat.
A drunken Thax is attacked behind the inn and incapacitated in one attack by blade and poison. Meanwhile the others have a drunken confrontation with some dwarves, quickly defused by Charlie. Myalo noticed a shade following Thax and investigates. She loses sight of Thax but suddenly comes face to face with the assasin. The halfling acts perfectly normal, but is not deceived by Myalo's attempt to do the same and she attacks once more.
Levin finds an unconscious Thax, hidden in one of the ruins. They discover the assasin was promised 400 gp to deliver Thax alive to the 'Old Man'. The party is not very cooperative when Sildar arrives to investigate and unsuccesfully tries to hide this information. Seeing how he broke his oath by impeding a judicial investigation, Sildar revokes Levin's membership of the Crownshields. Thax is then brought to the townhal and locked in a cell while Sildar investigates the crimescene. When he returns, Sildar repeats his question whether Thax has any idea why this attack occured. More truthfull this time, Thax shares some of his viewpoint. Sildar decides that any blame which falls upon Thax is outside of his jurisdiction, returns the recovered Bottling Flask to him and tells him to get it out of Caeldun before more trouble follows it.
With Thax released, the party discusses all that has happened in their single room at the Sleepy Squirrel. A messge for Althea from Myalo's contacts arrives and warns that it seems the Eladrin was not the only recent incursion. This causes her to contemplate her next steps. Later, the party has a conversation with Charlie. He warns them that this was a Gwrandawyr agent, but believes she was not acting for that network in this instance. Through their questions they learn that Charlie had a past in which he wore another name, learned magic and did things he now hides from. He also shares that the written notes came from him. When asked why he broke his cover for them, he only says that some actions can't ever be made right, but that he must try or not be able to live with himself.
The party wakes to find Althea having made a desicion. With the warning that others are looking for her and her company attracts too much attention, she will leave the party to go looking for answers and divert attention from the Vizier card, which she leaves in Myalo's care. After this goodbye, the party try to talk with Sildar about the danger that Malevasurrfel still poses. He advocates to let sleeping dragons lie and wait for the support of Markgraaf Baron Silene Martes. In a private conversation, he gives Levin a final chance to prove himself as a Crownsguard a renew Sildar's faith in him.
Vhir returns from his meeting and is overwhelmed by deep exhaustion. To the other's confusion he climbs a tree and falls into a deep sleep. He has a vision of steam and fire and reports to the presence there. He wakes up in agonizing pain and with the smell of burning flesh and hair - a deep red marking now showing on his shoulder.
Vhir decides to react to Halia Thornton's reminders of their deal and meets her in one of the ruins. He shares the basic information on Penntor Castle, but she notices he is holding back. Giving him only a part of the information he requested, she convinces him to share all he knows in exchange for the full document.
Gundren Rockseeker is visited by the party while he recovers from his injuries under the care of Sister Garaele. He shared his suspicion that his brothers are being kept prisoner by the Black Spider in the mine of Girin-Ubgrûr. The adventurers signed a contract with him, attributing a 2,5% ownership of the mine to each if they cleared the mine and freed his brothers.
Afterwards Daran Edermath also wanted a word with you, especially with Levin. He revealed himself to be a member of the Order of Bronze Knights and tested Levin, who showed himself to be selfless and thus received a standing invitation to become a squire in the Order.
Travelling to Girin-Ubgrûr with haste, the party encountered and fought a hill giant in the foothills of the Daudrvell. While resting afterwards, they also caught sight of a red and white dragon fighting in the sky several miles to the east. This battle was cut short when from the mountains below them a much larger white dragon leapt into the sky, killing the smaller white dragon in one blow and immediately causing the red one to retreat. Those of the party with some knowledge of dragons immediately recognised this gargantuan dragon to be Uxingerinc, the Austere Hunger.
Not wanting to linger, they quickly continued on and entered the mine of Girin-Ubgrûr.
Entering the mine, the party quickly discovered the remains of Tharden Rockseeker. Not soon after, they discovered a second, much older corpse which tuned out to still be unalive. Calling itself Stix, it managed to convince the group to let it out of the pit it had fallen into to act as your guide in the mine. Together they survived an attack from an ochre jelly and had a conversation with Black Spider, who whispered from the shadows and proposed a trade: Nundro Rockseeker for a symbol which Levin had discovered under Tressendar Manor many weeks before.
At the entrence hall where this meeting was to take place the party found many more skeletons, some carrying symbols as well, and one bearing a letter written centuries before.
The Black Spider used a döppelganger ally who posed as Nundro Rockseeker in an attempt to trick the party. Thax however was planning to break their deal as well, and Stix realised something was not what it seemed when the 'dwarf' came forward for the exchange. The drow and his ally managed to wrest the symbol from Thax and flee, setting ghouls on the party when it gave chase. These undead nearly proved fatal, and the group was forced to retreat, first to a storage room and a couple of hours later to the entrance, where they were once again accosted, this time by bugbears which were guarding the exit. The party managed to gain a secure position and settled down for a tense sleep, trying to regain their strength.
After resting, the party entered the mine again and found a way to the deeper caverns, though it led them through some luminescent and poisonos funghi. In a cave which had seen a large magical battle they disturbed and then destroyed a wraith, all that was left of the once great wizard Mormesk. While searching the wizard quarters where he had died a sign of Ioun directed the party to find the hidden entrance to the Sketched Library. Most of its contents had intentionally been destroyed, but a thorough search ended in finding five surviving tomes.
The group defeats a shadow which attacks them and confronts the Guardian of the Spellforge: a Spectator. After some time, a lot of attempts at communicating silently and two forged letters, they discover that this being was summoned under a magical contract and manage to convince it that this contract has been terminated. It promptly disappears to its home dimension.
Having reached the forge while the party was preparing their deceptions to trick the Spectator, the Black Spider used the Symbol of Izora to gain entry and laid his trap. From the ceiling he and his spiders rained webs and spells down on the party. Some managed to free themselves and engaged the spiders while Stix dealt a lot of damage to Nezznar and Vhir managed to wrest him down to the ground. The cornered drow then killed Stix and portaled away, swearing vengeance on them for this defeat.
After a very short discussion the party leaves Stix's body behind in the Spellforge, looking to end the drow that took its life. An Augury spell reveals that going to the entrance to try and intercept the drow will yield both Weal and Woe. This proves quicker then expected, as the poisonous spores in the funghi cave which is on the way overwhelm Myalo while the party's hasty and therefore noisy dash attracts the attention of a second swarm of stirges. Both Myalo and Levin go down, but in the party manages to save themselves, realizing that they have lost the chance to catch up. Myalo finds that in the mess of gelatinous funghi now staining her there are bone fragments, as well as a strange amulet hooked by the buttons of her clothes. Falling down twice into the field of funghi and stuggling for survival there has had her discover the remains of some lost soul, and the magical item it used to carry.
After taking a long rest, the party redistributes some of the magical items they have found and then continue on into the Great Cavern, looking to fulfill their contract of clearing the mine and hiping that the Black Spider might still be in his base somewhere. In the darkness of the great cavern they encounter seven ravenous ghouls and manage to defeat them.
Moving further into the mine, the group discovers another cavern, clearly used for smelting and processing ore. When Vhir enters the room a floating skull wreathed in green flame rises from the pile of bodies here and cackles loudly, telling them to flee. The party tries to negotiate like it did with the spectator, but is rebuffed immediately while eight of the dead rise and attack them. The flameskull uses a Fireball on them as soon as it can and the party tries to retreat. Back in the Great Cavern they manage to destroy the flameskull and the gnome zombies give up the chase. The dwarvish dead however continue to hunt down Vhir, calling him an oathbraker. One by one they fall, until the last zombie, having returned from brink of destruction multiple times, delivers a fatal blow to Vhir.
Seemingly frozen in thought for a time, Thax eventually reads the Scroll of Revivify. The ritual is succesfull and Vhir returns to life.
