Shachi

Insight, Loyalty & Courage

Shachi, otherwise known as Idrani or Poulom, is the divine Queen of the Devas, the goddess of insight and the wife of Indra. She has the ability to perceive the secrets of both the physical world and spiritual worlds and is even a member of the Matrikas. Among these goddesses, she is associated with the emotion of jealousy.

Shachi is actually the daughter of the asura Puloman, famous for being remarkably beautiful, sensual, kind and proud! This meant she was desired by many men but rejected every one. Then, one day, Indra whisked her away and she came to fall in love with him, marrying him and becoming an immortal goddess! Still Shachi was sought after, being abducted more than once, including by the mortal king Nahusha who wanted to make her his queen. Despite his attempts to seduce her, Shachi cleverly dethroned the king and reunited with Indra. She isn't often worshipped by herself except for those within royal families, acting as a family deity. She is even considered the ruler of Venus.

Depiction

Shachi is depicted in temples sitting on the divine mount of her husband, a white elephant, if not perched on his lap. She is shown to have two to four arms, red or golden skin, three eyes and a blue sari and a crown. When sitting on Indra's lap, one arm is around her husband while the other holds a musical scale, Shachi herself joyful and young. Otherwise, two of her hands perform mudra while the remaining two hold a vajra and a spear. Alternately, she may be depicted carrying a sutra, pot or vessel or a lotus flower. Her other symbols are the kalpaka tree and lions.
