Merchant Paviseman
Lore
Founded after the ousting of House Redwine, the merchant princes of the newly formed House Brightwater looked around at those who were loyal. The crossbow, largely considered a peasant weapon since it takes only a few weeks of training to use one, became the weapon of choice during the rebellion and formalized after the merchants success.
Since that time, the soldiers that wield these heavy arbalest are anything but commoners. The large tower shields are staked into the ground to provide cover for the man behind. These soldiers carry a small hand weapon in case things get personal, but the weight of the bolts typically don’t let enemies get that close.
Ranks
Grande Voco
The commander of the soldiers. This is typically a largely political role, not a career soldier. It is currently held by Benny the Killer
Vocina
Each of the 3 Vocina captains command 90 soldiers. These are career soldiers and will be trained in large and small unit tactics.
Quiverman
Each quiverman commands 30 soldiers, and these lower level captains will commonly be assigned to tasks needed by those higher up. Meaning it’s unusual to find just a few Pavise crossbows alone.
Rivalries
The Ravenseye Hoplites are rivals as their houses via for primacy of the Southern Marches
