Murkwald

Murkwald is an old Proxian mining and lumber town to the east of Eridale. The town began as a few motley houses to accommodate miners and lumberjacks as they worked in the harsh, Green Island forests. Commander Erina Grey, the third Commander of Eridale set up the town in an effort to expand and consolidate her control of Eridale's surrounding resources.   The town has access to a somewhat flourishing economy thanks to constant Goblin contact through trade and refugee smuggling. Murkwald uses both the Goblin scrap standard and bartering depending on the people. Those that wish to obtain something from Goblin trade will use Scrap. Others that have no wish to leave Murkwald or have use for golbin trade will use bartering as a more effective means of getting what they want.   The community of the town is close knit, and most people know and tolerate one another despite their racial appearances.   The Demonborne mayor Balius leads the townsfolk at the Town Hall. He usually stays cooped up in his magical library, which features thousands of texts and artifacts from all over the world.

Government

Balius makes an executive decision on all matters relating to trade, borders and social stability at the majority of people's behest. His leadership style leads him to hold town meetings with issues put to a vote the majority of the time.

Defences

Murkwald has geographical defenses in that it is situated at the base of a mountain. An ogre camp lives above them, neutral with the town. It blocks any attack coming down from the mountain. In addition, the mining cave that has many entrances around the mountain has been blocked off by the Goblin settlement within the mine. A large, wooden stake wall encapsulates all of the town's operations save a few lumber camps and farms. If this wall is well maintained, the town is entirely self sufficient and can wait out small scale raiding parties.   The most potent defense is an enchantment controlled by Balius, preventing Almara from seeing the true face of the town. Almara is the warden of all of the Cracked Islands and acts as a primary barrier of entry to any wishing to investiage. She is empowered by ancient magics, a dangerous foe even to organised search parties for wanted fugitives.

Industry & Trade

Murkwald began with a largely stagnant economy. Over time as Balius fostered relationships with the Goblin settlement, friendships began to arise and with that, mutual benefits. Goblins have introduced the Scrap currency to Murkwald in place of their bartering and Murkwald sells it's lumber and iron equipment to the golbins.   The town is focused on hiding from the world an maintaining order through small scale trading operations with the Goblins. In return, the Goblins control the mining operation and can live in peace in the town's mine, trading refugees that come through the Undermine for profit.

History

During the Curse of Almara, the townsfolk began to take on the same appearance as those in Eridale and found that a chronic laze afflicted them. Many were drawn back to their familial homes in Eridale but some remained in the town, trapped. The mines, now abandoned, were beset by Goblins, who set up a settlement.   Twenty years after the Curse of Almara befell Murkwald, Balius, the Demonborn, discovered Murkwald during his journey through the Undermine. He settled within Murkwald and fortified it, believing it a safe haven from all beings due to the powerful presence of Almara, who roamed the island, killing all that did not bow to her.   Soon, more refugees travelling the Undermine found safe haven within Murkwald. Balius welcomed them no matter their race and the settlement began to grow once more. The Proxian's beset by the Curse of Almara that continued to stay in Murkwald had little choice in the matter and, due to the curse, were too weak to fight the charismatic appearance of the half-incubus Balius.
