Eidonite (eye-don-ite)
Also known as Okan stones, eidonite is the only crystal that can fully conduct magic. Although it’s a relatively uncommon mineral, eidonite is very valuable to magic and non-magic users alike. Eidonite is a bright turquoise crystal of hardness 6 on the Mohs scale, and it’s usually used in its polished, uncut form or as a rough powder.
This mineral is beautiful but is rather reactive to magic, and it’s capable of storing spells and enchantments from minutes to months depending on spell type and crystal size. Which is why mining such a crystal can be a dangerous operation. No magical equipment can be brought into the mines for fear of causing a cave-in, and it has to be transported in glass or lead containers to prevent any accidents.
While eidonite is a beautiful and useful stone, it has a ‘dark’ counterpart. Identical in shape and colour to regular eidonite, streaked eidonite is the more volatile form of this crystal, and much harder to mine and use due to its tendency to discharge or warp spells randomly. Streaked eidonite can be differentiated by the dark green or brown stripes or streaks running across or through the crystal. It can sometimes grow alongside or even within deposits of eidonite. A common cause of mining accidents or cave-ins is from the improper extraction of streaked eidonite.
Due to its unstable nature, streaked eidonite is also nicknamed Iwin stone, meaning ‘disturbed-spirit’ stone in local Ile-Ile dialect.
Eidonite in small doses can also enhance magical ability, but it’s a dangerous thing to try.
