DEMONOLOGIE takes place in a Hell beaten and bloodied after a centuries long civil war tore the realm apart both physically and ideologically, the ideas and images of rebellion still fresh in the memories of many, along with the lifetimes of conflict. The imperial legion quickly scrambled to occupy as much territory as they could, ensuring reconstruction without sedition. Those territories which could not be occupied or simply forgotten fell to militias, gangs, crime families, and other illicit groups formed either from participants in the conflict, it's victims, or others willing to exploit the broken economy. Political figures and noble families would purchase or trade for these territories in the post war political gambit, often employing the previous owners as security or acting as business partners.
Much of the imperial government fell silent as legions occupied territory using POWs and political prisoners to rebuild the broken landscape. The few announcements were drowned out by the abuses of the occupying forces, bitter and broken legionaries with no other outlet. Many took bribes, smuggled drugs and guns, or participated in underground fight clubs. Houses of comfort were commonplace and often owned by members of the criminal underworld, visited by soldier and civilian alike.
As the occupation ended, those who gained control with violence and illicit business had become too strong and wide spread for the imperial government to dismantle. The government and criminal underworld would eventually become one as both the government and many private groups made deals and contracts to ensure they both remained in control as well as shape this new Hell to an image more accepting of their increasing restrictions. Gang wars and internal corporate, government, and militant conflicts are common, most major regions have border checkpoints, the circle of Wrath is in semi martial law as the imperial legions struggle to regain control of the area. It was thought with the cessation of the conflict that the political dissidence and rebellious spirit would die along with the failed revolution and bleak years of conflict, however with many still reeling from the war and their government's centuries of inaction and neglect, the issue of self governance still remains unsolved.
