Basic Information
Genetics and Reproduction
The seeds sprout only twice a year during the times where wind speed is at its highest. These "seeds" are 24 centimeters long cones with spiky edges; when the winds hit hard, the cones break away from the branch and soar high above the canopy. The winds and wind particulates break apart the fragile scales of the seeds, which causes the pollinating portions to fall to the ground. If they fall onto soil, they germinate immediately. If fallen on other foliage or on rocks, nothing can germinate. This heavy pollen times from the seeds requires any humans in the vicinity to mask to avoid inhaling them once the winds break open the seeds and the pollen rains. Inhaling too much pollen causes lung damage.
