Oqiuzíwín̥er̥o
A thick-furred muscular creature with four legs, a long snout, and large floppy ears. It has a long, split tail (splits into two tails near base of spine) that is prehensile for grabbing branches or prey or rocks. It has deep eyes set forward and relatively good eyesight, but relies more on smell and chemical receptors to locate prey. It's fur-coat can shift colors to camoflauge with its landscape, and it runs at a top speed of 120 kilometers per hour. It's method of hunting is stealth hiding, then leaping at the prey or chasing it down the canyon and into an underground cavern, where it can corner it. Most variations of this species live high in the top layers of the Raliok forest in Vera, but there is a smaller sub-species that live in the mountains and canyons of Egoni. The smaller species can leap off sides of canyons with outspread legs and fluff out its fur into a hardened wing-like membrane for gliding along heavy winds. It then pulls in its legs and fur and drops down onto prey. Some of them have been domesticated by locals to assist with hunting or guarding their homes from larger predators. They are friendly and have a sixth sense, as in can send limited images to their handlers of what they see/sense in their scouting/hunting escapades. This makes them useful for explorers.
Basic Information
Growth Rate & Stages
The creature is hermadorphites, where each adult has the ability to germinate or give birth to the cache of eggs. They generally birth three to seven eggs, and hold them in pouches against their tummies or in large and well defended nest-sites; there is four to five helpers during the birth process. The fur-lined pouch only opens up during the reproductive season for the Oqiuziwinero, and is otherwise dormant and unnoticeable in other times. Once born, the young emerge from their shells and leave the pouch or nest. The young grow relatively fast and within two orbital years are fully grown adults. Most of them run in packs, and those that hunt alone tend to be scouts for the pack. The scouts will send back images of good hunting or nesting locations for the pack to move toward. Hunting is down in pairs. They can live up to 40 orbital years, and the elderly tend to hang back and guard nesting sites rather than engage in hunting or scouting. The rest of the pack cares for the elder until they die, upon which the pack will push the body into the lower levels of the Raliok forest OR if a mountainous species, push off the side of a cliff.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Mostly carnivores. They eat a mixture of mammalians and reptile creatures. They sometimes will nibble on Raliok leaves and/or fungi if water is scarce, especially fungi in mountain caverns since those often hold an abundance of moisture.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Exceptional hearing and smell organs. This creature also has decent sight, especially in low-light areas, where it sees the chemical indicators of living organisms in a faux color spectrum. It can send limited images to its handlers with proper training, but it has low sapience.
Lifespan
40 orbital years
Average Height
0.5 meters to 1.5 meters
Average Weight
30 to 75 kg
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Fur is naturally a faded lavender but can alter coloration depending on the colors of the environment.
