Sable Sentinels

“We stand where others falter.”   Despite not having a formal standing army to call its own. The Sable Sentinels are the elite royal guard of Cardona, sword protectors of the Sovereign, the Palacio de Solymar, and the legacy of the Andromeda line. Chosen from among the most skilled warriors, tacticians, and arcane defenders of the realm, they are as much a symbol as they are a force – embodying discipline, discretion, and unshakeable loyalty.   Origin: Formed centuries ago, during the reign of Sovereign Araceli Andromeda, the Sentinels were originally tasked with protecting the Sovereign against political assassins during a time of internal unrest. The first commander was said to have trained in both swordplay and shadowmancy, believing that true guardians must move unseen and striking only when all else fails.   Their name comes from their midnight-black ceremonial armor, which contrasts with the sunlit beauty of the palace, making them a living reminder that even in a city of art and light, vigilance is essential. Upon induction, a Sentinel swears their life to the Sovereign beneath the rising sun, drinking from a chalice of seawater and wine, symbolizing loyalty to both crown and city. While serving, Sentinels are considered beyond blood ties and do not reveal their true names, only their rank and call sign. Upon retirement, they may return to civilian life-but few do.   They wear black-lacquered plate armor with etched silver inlays resembling crashing waves and sunrays-symbols of sea and sovereignty. Their helmets are fashioned like stylized masks, often with minimal visors, giving them an almost statuesque, faceless appearance. They are armed with twin sabers or sun forged glaives along with a ceremonial dagger inscribed with their oath. Only the highest-ranking sentinels carry enchanted veil capes, which shimmer faintly and can briefly distort light, allowing them to become near-invisible when standing still.   There are currently about 250 active Sentinels. Those in the know are aware the Sable Sentinel’s fighting prowess is comparable to Jade Forts shock troopers or of Uhlmar’s berserkers. The Sentinels are stationed within El Palacio de Solymar, especially the Solarium Throne Room, and the Vault of Echoes.
