Originally considered an extension to the Shattered Expanse, the discovery of a savanna to the south pushed Smiltan exploration to discover as much as possible about the area.

Because the Shattered Expanse had been healing over the majority of two decades, explorers and scientists began to comb through the glass covered area looking for valuable information or goods. Instead, they found a savanna with grasses and animals that had only been found on the Disk before. Though some sandy areas began to show more farmable soil, the terraforming of Smiltis had just begun, and so this event sparked a mad rush to claim and colonize the area.
