Remnant

I gathered my armful of firewood and strode back to my campsite, intent on a long night's rest. When I emerged from the trees, however, my thoughts turned from my bedroll as I saw the flickering apparition of a woman, cast in monochrome, sitting beside the dying embers of the campfire. You might understand the violent shiver that slid up my spine as I saw the ghastly hole in her stomach, and I nearly dropped the firewood. The Remnant disappeared when I blinked, though it was almost certainly still there. With great trepidation, I sat beside the place she had been, and threw in the wood, watching the fire flare brightly. The Remnant reappeared soon after, as still as she was before, though there was a more peaceful expression on her face as she basked in the rejuvenated heat of the flames.     -Magna Moribus   Remnants are the apparitions that appear around ruins.   These apparitions look much like they did at the time of their death: retaining their clothing (or lack thereof) and their injuries. Their colors have been drained away, leaving them in a continuous state of monochrome. Their forms flicker like firelight, the only movement ever observed from any Remnant, as they tend to appear frozen in a single position. Their forms can disappear when not observed, where they can move around and appear elsewhere. They cannot be touched through any means, and they seem to not be able to touch anything themselves, though a bitter chill spreads through the body when in contact with Remnants.   While the behavior of Remnants is variable, depending on the personalities of their original body, they share several features. They seem attracted to warmth and humanity, like the voices of people. They are always silent, whether by choice or by their anatomy, adding to their mysterious nature. Remnants seem confined to specific areas, speculated to be the location in which they perished. They are found mostly in pre-Andier ruins, but they can also be found in much smaller numbers throughout the rest of Elgis.   It is interesting to note that there has never been a recorded incident of a Remnant being the product of modern death, always being unfamiliar, regardless of how many people have died in that location. It is unknown by which mechanism a person becomes a Remnant.   Remnants are perceived differently by different parts of Elgis. Most people in The Nation of Ardetus think that the remnants are good luck, successful practitioners of Adradht manifesting to help the living and should be venerated like any other natural spirit. Most of the Mavanish Empire thinks that Remnants are those who were not returned to the sleeping mother, Anaponoi, and are not necessarily good or bad. Those from Pokugara think that the apparitions are sent by Kunaka as warnings or moral guides. The general lack of alarm or hatred at the existence of these apparitions is due to the lack of harm they cause. At worst, a Remnant is alarming and unsettling. Otherwise, they're just a bit sad to witness.
