Post Offices

Post offices are the central hubs for letters, packages, and other assortments to be delivered across great distances. Even with the invention of Robin Paper and other magical or mechanical methods of sending messages, the world still needs reliable centers to handle large scale and long distance deliveries.   Post offices generally come in two types small and large depending on the size and importance of the settlement. Most towns have a small post office, while major cities boast massive delivery halls capable of sorting mail across land, sea, and sky.

Small Post Office

A small post office is divided into four main areas:   1. Mailbox Room: A section filled with personal mailboxes for local residents.   2. Front Counter: The public entrance and service counter, where citizens drop off or pick up mail.   3. Sorting Room: A back room where letters and packages are organized for outgoing and incoming deliveries.   4. Transport Area: Usually connected to a small stable for one or two horses and landing perches for messenger birds.   If the town is near a river or coastline, the post office may also include a waiting dock or sheltered cove used by aquatic creatures trained for waterborne mail routes.

Large Post Office

A large post office is a bustling building, often two or more stories tall. The ground floor handles the main reception and sorting work, while the upper floors contain private or rented mail slots reserved for city residents and businesses.   Behind the main hall lies the sorting and dispatch area, operated by several clerks using magical or pneumatic tubes to route mail quickly. From here, deliveries are separated into land, sea, or air routes—each handled in specialized wings or annexes.   Attached to the main complex is an animal care facility and carriage Depot, where messenger horses, birds, and other transport creatures are fed, treated, and prepared for their next journey. Well the characters are maintenance and reloaded for the next leg of the journey.   Post offices located near the sea often have their own dock and pool area, allowing quick transfers between sea couriers and land or air messengers. These facilities serve as both rest stops and transfer points, ensuring the world’s flow of information never stops moving.

Postal Employment and Guild Structure

Depending on the kingdom or continent, post services may be privately owned, guild-based, or state operated.   On the continent of Raygon, each kingdom maintains its own Mail Guild, but all are united under the United Postal Guild, an organization that oversees inter kingdom routes and ensures that mail and messengers can travel freely across borders. This alliance standardizes procedures, seals, and courier training throughout the continent.

Postal Roles and Occupations

Postmaster

  • The Postmaster oversees all postal offices within a city or designated region.
  • They ensure every branch operates efficiently and maintains proper communication with neighboring towns.
  • Their duties include supervision, scheduling, and ensuring the welfare of employees and courier animals alike.
  • In larger cities, they may also coordinate with other kingdoms through the United Postal Guild network.

Postal Delivery Courier

  • The couriers are the lifeblood of the postal system, responsible for carrying mail between offices and delivering it directly to homes and businesses.
  • They must be skilled riders, able to handle horses, sky-creatures, or regional mounts—such as camels or scaled lizards in desert areas.
  • Couriers are trained in navigation, geography, and field safety to ensure prompt and secure deliveries.
  • They are also expected to care for their animal partners, forming lasting bonds built on mutual trust.

Mailroom Clerk

  • Mailroom clerks handle the customer-facing and sorting aspects of postal operations.
  • They manage front counters, organize letters and parcels, and assist with weighing and pricing deliveries.
  • Strong communication, organization, and sales skills are essential, as well as basic physical ability to lift packages up to 30 lbs.
  • Clerks receive basic instruction in magical seal application, though advanced rune-writing is optional and typically reserved for senior staff.

Head Mailroom Clerk

  • The Head Clerk supervises all other clerks within a post office.
  • They ensure efficient workflow and customer service, manage training, and handle complex deliveries.
  • Skilled in rune-writing, they are authorized to apply secured seals to sensitive parcels.
  • At least one Head Clerk is always on duty to oversee daily operations and maintain order in the mailroom.

Postal Animal Caretaker

  • These workers are responsible for the health and maintenance of all courier creatures land, sea, or air.
  • Duties include feeding, cleaning, grooming, and basic medical care.
  • They must understand the behaviors and magical traits of a wide range of beasts, which can vary greatly depending on the region or species used.
  • The position is considered the second most dangerous job in the guild, as even trained courier animals may have unpredictable temperaments or elemental abilities.
  • Extensive knowledge of creature care and field veterinary practices is highly recommended.

Regional Variations

While the Standard Post Guild model is widely adopted, many kingdoms adapt it to their own geography, culture, or level of technology.
