Orcholis
There are many qualites about my children that I adore. Humans have the capacity to bring order from choas, bring any problem to heel with their passsion. But their greed ... it makes me turn away in shame.
The Orcholis are the dominant people in Orchol, a kingdom located in the far south. The choice of their society reflects the key tenets of their beliefs: a rejection of the divine and any morality they espouse. This has led to a culture that prioritizes might over right, characterized by hedonism.
Much of the world is familiar with the Orcholis due to their habit of selling members of the poor caste as slaves to pay for their lifestyles or to benefit themselves in one way or another. Former members of this society can be found throughout the world serving in various capacities. Some, such as the medical doctor Ezekiel Vindold, have been fortunate to gain their freedom but refuse to return to a land that sold them.
Naming Traditions
Family names
Many families' names are based on materials found in the world; richer families are named after metals and ores, while poorer families are often named after plants or animals.
Culture
Shared customary codes and values
Radical Agnosticism: The Orichols actively deny the influence of the Eldrin, believing that if they were truly powerful or benevolent deities, then they would have long ago intervened to ease the world's suffering. This had led to a philosophy that holds individuals are responsible just for their own well-being and pleasure in this life, as there is no guarantee of an afterlife, divine intervention, or needing to hold to the ideals and commandments of the Eldrin. This fuels their hedonism, as they believe that only what can be experienced and enjoyed in the present moment truly matters.
Hedonism and Individual Liberty: The pursuit of pleasure is paramount. It is common for wealthy members of this society to engage in elaborate feasts, physical indulgence, and personal freedoms. However, contrary to what is taught by the Maiden or Kellenner the Guardian, this "liberty" is only extended to those with the means to secure it.
The Purpose of the Weak: Those who are not able to secure their liberty, even through no fault of their own, have often found their freedom revoked when it benefits those in power. This has caused thousands of young children in each generation to be sold into slavery to extend the power and pleasure of those currently in power.
Practicality and Materialism: In the absence of absolute standards of morality, the Orichols place immense value on tangible and practical skills that ensure greater wealth and physical pleasure. Skills that produce immediate, measurable results are highly respected in their culture.
Self-Reliance and Cunning: Due to the nature of the society, Orichols are forced to be fiercely self-reliant. Cunning and shrewdness are almost required traits for survival and advancement, particularly amongst those who would be willing to stab you in the back to advance themselves.
