Vegdur

History

Originally founded as a surface outpost during Ironhold’s early expansion, Vegdur quickly became essential due to its river access. It grew from a fortified trade post to a bustling city when river commerce surged across central Iroth. Though it has never faced invasion, it has been raided several times by bandits and brigands attempting to intercept trade shipments. Vegdur’s walls were rebuilt in black basalt after a prolonged battle in previous years, and have held firm ever since.

Geography

Vegdur is nestled in the gentle foothills to the east of Melgalar. The city sits astride the Mythenar River, a powerful current that flows southeast through Tanaria and eventually out to the sea. The terrain surrounding the city includes wooded groves, stone ridges, and gently sloping plains carved with irrigation channels and ancient dwarven aqueducts. The river is wide and deep here, fast enough for waterwheels but calm enough for barges and cargo rafts.

Climate

Vegdur experiences a temperate mountain climate. Winters are cold and snowy but not punishing; summers are cool and breezy, thanks to elevation and the constant rush of the river. Fog is common in the early mornings, particularly where the river bends near the city’s edge. Storms roll in from the north but often break against the mountain range.

Natural Resources

While not a mining city per se, Vegdur acts as a refining and shipping hub. Ore and raw stone arrive from deeper Ironhold outposts like Dolum, where Vegdur's skilled artisans refine and craft them into tools, weapons, and trade goods. The surrounding forests provide timber for construction and boat-making, and the river is rich in freshwater fish. Small veins of tin and iron dot the nearby hills, supporting local blacksmiths.
