Anatomy

Cobalt Dragonborn are sinewy and tall, with wiry muscle and a predatory gait. They typically stand slightly above average for dragonborn—often around 6'8" to 7'2"—with elongated limbs and a lean, agile frame well-suited for forest stalking and ambush. Unlike more robust or physically imposing dragonborn, Cobalts are built for control, cunning, and trap-setting rather than brute force. Their long muzzles are angular and sharp, with thin jaws and nostrils that flare wide during heightened senses or battle focus. Their tails are slender, whip-like, and surprisingly expressive, often used for balance and subtle communication.   Most notably, their horns are minimal—two short, curved stubs that angle backward, low-set near the top of their skull. Their eyes are always a deep, striking red or crimson, a glow that’s often visible in shadowy conditions. Their scales are a patchwork of cobalt hues: deep midnight blues, cerulean streaks, and navy blotches intermixed across the body. No two Cobalt Dragonborn have identical patterns, and some tribes interpret these patterns as signs of fate, leadership, or spiritual lineage.   Despite their lean build, their hide is incredibly resilient, especially against crushing forces or magnetic fields. Their skeletons are laced with trace metals that subtly resonate in the presence of large quantities of iron or steel, granting them a rudimentary directional sense for such materials—an echo of their progenitor’s metalsense.

Biological Traits

Cobalt Dragonborn stand out from their kin with a unique blend of sleek agility and latent magnetic power. They are naturally lean and long-limbed, their musculature more whipcord than brawn. Their reaction time is exceptional, especially when facing threats in dense terrain or subterranean lairs. Their scales have a natural resistance to forceful impacts, particularly bludgeoning and concussive effects, and metallic objects often seem to subtly resist striking them, an echo of their ancestral magnetic field.   In addition to physical resilience, their minds are unusually sharp, particularly regarding manipulation and illusion. They have an instinctual affinity for magical misdirection and command spells—even those not trained in magic display a higher-than-normal resistance to enchantment and illusion, owing to a cultural and perhaps biological tendency toward mental fortitude and suspicion.   Another notable trait is their dominance aura—a barely perceptible presence that grows more intense with age or social power. While not magical in most cases, this aura has a psychological effect on others, especially those of weaker will, who often feel an urge to defer or avoid conflict when around a pureblooded Cobalt Dragonborn. This is part natural charisma, part conditioning, and part cultural ritual.

Genetics and Reproduction

Cobalt dragonborn reproduce sexually, like others of their kind, and lay clutches of eggs ranging from two to four. While their biological needs mirror those of other dragonborn, their cultural approach to reproduction is markedly different: pure cobalt dragonborn rear their young communally until adolescence, after which the juveniles are cast out to forge their own destiny. This mirrors the behavior of cobalt dragons and is viewed not as abandonment, but as a rite of personal power. Failing to survive or carve one's own place is seen as a sign of unworthiness.   The eggs are typically incubated in magically reinforced dens or shadowed forest vaults lined with metallic dust, both for temperature regulation and symbolic reasons. It is believed that young cobalts are "tempered" by proximity to iron and steel—those who hatch among the heaviest metals are said to have stronger wills and breath.   Cobalt blood is recessive in mixed dragonborn pairings, and offspring of muddled bloodlines often loose the cobalt's characteristic scale blotching and magnetic affinity, though they frequently retain the species' cunning. Among pureblooded societies, such offspring are labeled hazebloods and are often relegated to subordinate roles unless they prove themselves through domination or cunning leadership.

Growth Rate & Stages

Cobalt dragonborn hatch after a 10-month incubation. Hatchlings are immediately alert and territorial—displaying aggressive or possessive behaviors far earlier than other dragonborn subraces. By age 5, they are already undergoing tactical training: trap-setting, spell-feinting, manipulation, and command are all introduced alongside traditional combat techniques.   They reach adolescence by age 12, at which point they are ritually exiled from the protection of their birth clutch. Surviving this period is the most important rite of passage for a cobalt. Those who return to the clan with trophies, conquered territory, or dominated minions are considered worthy and are elevated to leadership training. Those who fail to return are forgotten.   Cobalt dragonborn reach physical maturity by age 16 but often continue growing in subtle, serpentine ways into their early 30s. Unlike other subraces, aging is not viewed with reverence but with suspicion—only those who continue to assert power, dominance, and cunning are respected elders. The average lifespan of a Cobalt Dragonborn is 80–100 years, though assassinations, rivalries, and dominion challenges often reduce this to half.

Ecology and Habitats

Cobalt dragonborn prefer regions that offer both concealment and control—namely deep jungles, dense forests, and subterranean lairs. In hotter climates, they gravitate toward overgrown ruins and cliffside caves, while in cooler regions, they favor mist-covered forests or shadowy taigas with high canopies. Their lairs are deliberately treacherous, often filled with pressure traps, false doors, or illusion-cloaked dangers, designed to catch intruders unaware and reinforce the cobalt ideal of dominance through control.   These environments also provide the materials they favor: natural cover, iron ore veins, and territory to train or breed lesser creatures to act as minions. In more esoteric cases, some pwoerful cobalt clans establish dominions within the Plane of Shadow, where they carve lairs into shadowstone and command tribes of monstrous or dark-aligned creatures such as shadowborn, shadow-touched wolves, and warped kobolds.   Even among other dragonborn or humanoid races, cobalt dragonborn prefer a high degree of control over their surroundings. Their homes often include secret escape tunnels, listening vents, and illusion guarded sanctuaries. This tendency means they make excellent spies, saboteurs, and infiltrators—especially in lands dominated by rigid law or idealistic good.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Cobalt dragonborn are strict carnivores by culture and biological inclination, though they are technically omnivorous. They prefer meat that has been hunted, subdued, or captured through cunning rather than force, believing that prey taken by traps or manipulation tastes better and carries greater symbolic power. Some practice ritualistic butchery, carving out the heart or liver to consume first as an assertion of dominance over the slain.   They have a particular taste for creatures of metallic or armored nature—such as armadons, plated insects, or even dwarves—believing that digesting such beings enhances their resistance and sharpens their magnetic force. In the Shadow Plane, some consume shadowstuff-infused beasts, which they claim strengthens their connection to illusion and mental discipline.   In communities or mixed societies, they typically hunt or trap their own food and often refuse communal meals unless they are in charge of the preparation. Among pureblooded clans, hosting a feast means asserting your right to power—cooking or serving food is rarely done without a display of cunning or authority.

Biological Cycle

Cobalt dragonborn do not bruminate or undergo seasonal molting like some other dragonkin, but their dominance patterns and territorial instincts increase cyclically, especially in the darker months. Winter seasons—or the equivalent long-shadowed periods in jungle climates—are when the cobalts are most activate and aggressive. This is when they are most likely to engage in territorial expansion, challenge other leaders, or launch trap-laced raids.   During the wet season, some jungle-dwelling cobalts begin the Trap Renewal, a cultural and semi-religious custom of refreshing, replacing, and innovating the traps and illusions guarding their territory. This seasonal refresh not only reinforces security but also serves as a test of ingenuity—young cobalts who fail to update their defenses or who allow intrusions are harshly punished, demoted, or even exiled.   Elder cobalt dragonborn experience a gradual shift in behavior with age. As they grow older, they become more reclusive, more paranoid, and more dependent on illusion magic or manipulation. Many enter a state of "silent dominance," where they no longer speak aloud but instead issue psychic or magical commands through enchantments, unseen servants, or mentally bound followers.

Behaviour

Cobalt Dragonborn are defined by three primary traits: dominance, distrust, and cunning. Their worldview is hierarchical—someone must be in control, and if it's not them, it must be someone stronger they can eventually usurp. Even from a young age, they are taught to question authority, test boundaries, and assert superiority through control of space, mind, and resources.   Trust is foreign to the Cobalt psyche. Cooperation is a tactic, not a virtue. They often build relationships based on leverage and obligation rather than affection or loyalty. Among their own kind, dominance displays are constant, ranging from subtle word traps to actual trap-setting in personal quarters. In combat, they often prefer ambushes, psychological warfare, and leveraging minions to weaken or distract opponents.   Cobalt Dragonborn respect cunning over strength. They are just as likely to admire an enemy who outsmarts them as they are to kill one who merely overpowers them. Among their culture, cruelty is a form of artistry—how efficiently one breaks a mind, humiliates a foe, or manipulates an ally is often recited in songlike cadence during rituals. However, they are not without a code: a Cobalt Dragonborn who submits willingly or offers fealty is owed protection, provided they do not show cowardice or treachery.

Social Structure

Cobalt Dragonborn societies are meritocratic tyrannies: power is everything, but cleverness—not strength—is the highest currency. Social standing is based on manipulation, trapwork, magical mastery, and successful domination of others.   Every clan is ruled by a dominant figure known as a Magnetarch, Webfather, or Dominion Warden, depending on local traditions. Below them are tiers of lieutenants—Illusionists, Steelcallers, and Blotchelords—who maintain order through cunning, trap networks, and intimidation.   Younger or lower-caste Cobalts are constantly testing boundaries, looking for ways to ascend. Betrayal is expected—but must be done skillfully, cleanly, and with justification, or the clan may retaliate as one. Clans rarely exceed a few dozen members before splintering into rival cells, each with its own lair, culture, and trap philosophy.

Facial characteristics

They are marked by narrow, predatory faces and striking red eyes. Unlike most dragonborn, whose horns are often elaborate, Cobalt Dragonborn possess only two short, stubby horns at the crown of their skull—vestigial compared to other subraces.   Their muzzles are longer and more angular than average, often described as “knife-blade” in profile. Their jaws are lined with smaller, sharply pointed teeth that reflect their carnivorous heritage. The brow ridge is prominent and furrowed, giving them a perpetual look of calculated scrutiny.   Their eye glow is faint but ever-present, growing brighter in intense emotional states, such as battle, assertion of dominance, or magical concentration.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Cobalt Dragonborn are most commonly found in tropical jungles, dense forests, and shadow-shrouded regions, especially those rich in natural ferrous deposits. They favor territories difficult to invade or navigate—labyrinthine ruins, overgrown temples, deep canyons, and underground vaults are all considered ideal.   While rare, some Cobalt clans dwell in semi-reflective shadow realms, including border zones of the Shadowfell. These shadow-dwelling Cobalts have adapted to dim light and creeping magic, and are often even more paranoid and illusion-oriented than their Material Plane cousins.   Cobalt Dragonborn do not congregate in large nations. Instead, they form small but highly fortified dominions, each ruled by a powerful figure—sometimes a "Magnetarch," a trapmaster, or an illusionist tyrant. Their “nations” are often hidden, misdirected, or mobile, with outposts disguised as ruins or even false villages to draw in prey or rivals.

Average Intelligence

Cobalt Dragonborn are known for above-average intelligence, particularly in the areas of tactical thought, manipulation, and spellcraft. Even among commoners, cleverness is valued far above brute force, and children are taught riddles, misdirection, and problem-solving from early age.   The average Cobalt adult is well-versed in illusion theory, social manipulation, and battlefield control, even if not a caster themselves. Among purebloods, education in logic puzzles, psychological warfare, and terrain exploitation is nearly universal.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Cobalt dragonborn possess exceptional sensory capabilities, adapted for survival and domination in dense jungle or shadow-covered terrain. Their vision is exceptional, even among dragonborn, with eyes that can pierce through thick canopy or subterranean gloom. In addition, their red-tinted eyes filter through visual illusions more readily than most humanoids.   They retain a limited form of their progenitor's metalsense—a passive awareness of large concentrations of ferrous metal within a short range. This manifests not as a detailed radar, but as a gut feeling: a "tug" in their mind when near armored foes, buried iron traps, or strong magnetic interference. This trait is especially useful when hunting prey through dense underbrush or navigating ancient, trap-laden ruins.   While they do not possess full blindsight or tremorsense, many cobalt dragonborn train to develop what is known in their culture as "steel instinct"—an intense, battle-born awareness of motion and intent in their periphery. It is not magical, but it borders on precognitive when honed, particularly among elite warriors and commanders.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

Beauty among Cobalt Dragonborn is a matter of control, precision, and menace. Well-maintained scale blotches are seen as reflections of lineage and cunning. Cobalts polish the darker patches with volcanic ash or shadow-oil, enhancing contrast and gleam.   Symmetry is viewed with suspicion; irregularity in the scales or horns is prized, seen as a mark of nonconformity and inner depth. Body modifications—such as ritual tooth filing, horn scoring, and even arcane tattoos that shimmer only in darkness—are all considered displays of power, not vanity, though those who bear such marks are expected to back them up, with each modification supposed to have a deep meaning showing the strength of the individual dragonborn.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship is equal parts performance, negotiation, and tactical sparring. A suitor may lay literal or metaphorical traps for their intended—tests of wit, reactions, or submission. Matches are most successful when both participants attempt to outmaneuver the other and mutually fail, resulting in admiration.   Ideal courtship gifts include, but are not limited to:
  • A captured minion or pet
  • A trap designed specifically for the target's known habits
  • A bound illusion that plays a shared memory
  Long courtships are rare. Most end quickly in cohabitation, alliance, or bitter rivalry. Only in rare high-status unions are formal bonding rites held—the Knot of Blades, where both participants must disarm one another in front of their peers without drawing blood.

Relationship Ideals

Power-balanced partnerships are rare and respected. Most Cobalt Dragonborn expect one partner to be dominant in any relationship. That dominance, however, may change fluidly—based on cunning, achievement, or control over their shared domain.   Relationships are more alliance than romance. Emotional intimacy may develop, but vulnerability is often dangerous in their culture. Those who show softness must ensure it is never mistaken for weakness—only carefully displayed, like a dagger just out of sheath.   Lifelong unions are uncommon but not unheard of. When they do occur, they are often between individuals of such matched skill or treachery that neither can outplay the other.

Cobalt Dragonborn are lithe, agile, and deceptively strong. While they may lack the dense musculature of Red or Bronze dragonborn, their wiry frames are built for explosive strikes, trap evasion, and sustained endurance in hostile environments.   Their physical disciplines often center around limb control, breath economy, and motion denial—with martial arts traditions that emphasize dodging, countering, and ambushing.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
All pureblooded Cobalt Dragonborn bear mottled, blotchy patterns of blue scales. These scales range from midnight navy to pale cerulean, usually arranged in asymmetrical streaks and spots across the torso and limbs. No two Cobalts share the same pattern, and it is common for their blotches to be read like omens or clan signs.   Their scales are non-reflective and matte, which helps them blend into shadowed terrain. In older Cobalts, scales become darker and duller, while magnetically attuned individuals may develop subtle metal threading beneath their skin that becomes faintly visible in moonlight or during breath weapon use.
