The Crown Prince of the high elven kingdom of Miriel was traveling home with a diplomatic party after negotiations with the Iron Dwarves that took place in the Bursrood Hills, when his caravan was attacked by several assailants. Prince Fephephriel was killed along with several dignitaries. Witnesses claimed that the assailants were Dwarven, which very nearly led to a reignition of the war. However, the Iron Dwarven clans denied involvement, and it was officially found to be the work of a group of dwarven extremists unhappy with the results of the peace talks. Unofficially, investigators noted that the bodies of attackers who were killed during the ambush were identified as mercenaries, leading some to consider that the assassins were hired. The Miriel Royal family accepted the official findings of the inquest, and were quick to invalidate diverging theories.
As a result of the assassination of Prince Fephfefthriel, who was widely considered to be a strong and capable statesman, the second prince, Prince Falanthriel was named as the new heir to the throne. This caused some unrest among the nobility of Miriel, as Falanthriel was considered weaker than his brother.
On the night of the sixth day of the sixth month of the year 6666, a large rift opened in the Market Square of the Elven capital city, Isrannore. The demonic invaders overtook the Miriel and then laid waste to the entire eastern half of the continent, before being stopped at the Iron Peaks.
Also known as the "Long Retreat," the Hundred Year War was a conflict between Graz'zt's demonic forces and the combined armies of all the kingdoms on the Eastern Continent.

Marking the end of the Hundred Year War against the demonic invasion, the Battle for Kir Darul was the final victory achieved by the United Elantran forces. However, this victory felt hollow as it culminated in the destruction of the Eastern gate to the city, thereby officially removing the only remaining safe passage between the eastern and western sides of the Iron Peak Mountains. Therefore, after the battle, it was no longer considered safe or prudent to continue operations to the east, signalling the end of active mortal resistance to demonic rule.
