The Undercrossing

The Undercrossing began as a somewhat hidden crevice only about 20 feet wide at it's narrowest. It passes through the entire 1 mile width of the northern skinny section of the mesa and has a few points where the path opens into a cavern. During the beginning of the first construction of the northern fort on the mesa (later called the Fort of the Sun, or the Red Fort) in 8 AP, an underground passage was discovered with stairs and a rope and pulley system connecting with the Undercrossing directly below into one of these caverns.   For several decades after, the hidden passage was expanded and rebuilt to allow use of the Undercrossing by the Leyvarr Guard and Dom authorities only. It was the location of the Dom's prison until the renovations in the Undercrossing to be the main location for Elaria's elite visitors to travel up and down the mesa, where the prison was moved to the Tower of Ghosts.   Now, the Undercrossing is officially named the Flamesun Crossing, though locals still refer to it by its old name. It is a marvel of elegant stone facades built into the cliffside that make it appear as if stately houses were lifted up and placed into the cliffs. The passage was widened and bridges built spanning the gap from one wall to the other. Large stone balconies house markets, temples, and manicured gardens. Large bulbous lamps hang from the natural stone roof under the passage to light the beautiful small city underneath.   The Leyvarr Guard still maintains access to the large elevator system, though it's still much smaller than its counterpart at the southern end of the mesa. Smaller elevators have also been constructed suitable for the dignitaries and noble visitors that the undercrossing accomodates.
