The Pits

The area south and west of Giant's Thumb  was known for it's reddish rocky boulders and bedrock of limestone, red limestone and red granite. When the roads began construction in 27 AP, quarrying began in the area to use in the road and palace construction. After decades of heavy construction in both the capital -- @Elaria -- , new forts, and roads throughout the Dom, a lot of material was removed, leaving behind open and wide bowls of quarry pits. Thus the area is called The Pits.   Several small towns still exist near the edges, housing quarry workers and the few local farmers where the ground isn't as rocky. The Quarries are still active, but don't pull nearly as much stone as when they were originally formed for Dom-wide projects.
