Wobü‘üki (/wo-bu-ʔ-'u-ki/)
A wobü‘üki is a traditional halfling tool for wayfinding, used by Winkies, Gillikins, Quadlings, and Munchkins alike. During the Earth-665 iteration of reality, the wobü‘üki played a critical role in the halfling settlement of the Pacific islands. And in the centuries since the halflings came to Eden, the tool has remained an important part of how the smallfolk of the world get from one place to another.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
From all outward appearances, the wobü‘üki appears to be little more than a smooth, palm-sized piece of lava rock. In the right hands, however, it can trace the paths taken by the user’s ancestors, descendants, siblings, and cousins.
The wobü‘üki determines if the hands holding it are the “right” hands by comparing the blood of its creator to the blood of the person currently holding it. If creator and holder share a bloodline, the holder is able to see ripples in the otherwise invisible Veil of the World which indicate the paths their relative has tread. These “ripples” manifest as wisps of glowing orange light.
Finally, the ability to see these ripples extends to any person(s) within a nine-foot radius who meet the criteria above.
Manufacturing process
To create a wobü‘üki, one must select a lava rock, mark it with one’s blood, and then speak a series of incantations. The size of the rock is not important, but most select a specimen which would be easy to carry.
History
The halflings of the Earth-665 iteration of reality loved to explore, but they also treasured their familial bonds above all else. In order to keep on exploring without permanently severing ties, they invented the wobü‘üki.
Tradition dictated that, upon deciding to leave a place, the eldest member of a traveling party would create as many wobü‘üki as their strength would allow. They would then place these stones into a ceremonial bowl and set it upon the floor of their iwo for any and all relatives who might want to follow them.
This is cool! For some reason, I have the Fortress of Solitude in my head that relies on Superman's DNA to enter it. That's probably just recency bias, since the new one just came out!

Yes! I was looking for a way that people could leave behind a bunch of stones to use to follow them, but without the fear that some crazy random stranger would/could pick one up. Of course, if you have crazy relatives…
