Spooktober 2025: Graven

I had a lot of fun working on the dynamic between Frieda and Kef in The Blood of Seven Queens #5, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to return to their relationship ever since. Only problem is, I have no plans for Kef to show up in the story again anytime soon. But then, as I was struggling with what to do for the Spooktober 2025 prompt “graven,” it occurred to me that the statue of Ella and Gwen from issue #5 was technically “graven” and wouldn’t it just be fun to imagine Kef and Frieda as they were when they were hooking up in college.

This gave me the chance to play with how I’d costume Frieda at a different point in her life. How would I make her identifiable without the red hooded cloak, for instance? And it also gave me the chance to play with this notion I’ve been having over the last couple of weeks that Kef is a musician, and that she might find her way back into the story by virtue of her songs about Frieda becoming quite popular—maybe even viral, if there even is such a thing in the postapocalyptic paradise of Eden.
