Spooktober 2025: Foes

The White Mages are one of my most despicable creations. They started out as little more than an alliterative joke in an old worldbuilding article (where they were first referred to as the White Mages of Wonderland), but eventually turned up in the opening pages of The Blood of Seven Queens #1 as the childhood tormenters of our hero Frieda Jacobs. By the time I got around to writing and illustrating issue #4 and I needed an antagonist for the present-day portion of the story, they felt like a logical choice. I was itching to write them and their evilness.

And then to see them get what was coming to them at the hands of a certain Cheshire Cat.

Most of the foes my heroes encounter are people I’ve tried to give nuance and understandable motivation. But when I want to illustrate my heroine punching out fascists as an homage to Captain America #1, well that’s when I turn to the White Mages. They may not be the most complicated foes our heroes will ever encounter, but sometimes you just want to escape to a world where we all still agree that knocking out Nazis is the right thing to do.
