Conflagration

Conflagration is one of the Free Cities of Nunya and is best known for the number of times it has been destroyed and rebuilt. Situated in a lava flow hazard zone to the east of Dükuhüo Aüki, the town should have been abandoned ages ago. And yet, the hardy folk who call this place home just won’t give up.

Geography

Conflagration is located on the Lake of Fire, an inaccurately named volcanic plateau bounded by Dükuhüo Aüki in the west, the River Bidness in the south, and the River of Sins to the north and east. Viewed from a distance, the landscape looks flat and level, but it’s actually lumpier than your mother’s oatmeal.

Layout & Architecture

The layout of the town is amusingly haphazard. The “roads,” such as they are, are just the cooled rivers of lava from the volcano’s most recent eruption. Therefore, they sometimes twist and turn in quite odd directions.

As for the buildings, they are a hodgepodge of whatever survived the most recent eruption and of the architectural styles brought to this place by its latest crop of insane new arrivals. That said, the halfling iwo is the most common form of dwelling here—in part because tradition dictates that the iwo should be raised off the ground by stilts of some sort. And so, the iwo is the most likely structure to survive a lava flow—provided it rises high enough off the ground.

Notable Landmarks

In Conflagration, any building which survives one of the volcano’s frequent eruptions is considered a landmark. Here are the three which have been spared from Dükuhüo Aüki’s wrath for longer than any other.

The Ruin of Hulls is a tavern built from the husks of seven ships which once sailed up and down the River of Sins. Unluckily for those ship’s captains, they found themselves docked at Conflagration’s harbor during an eruption. The lava remade the shoreline, sparing the ships but covering the rest of the harbor in new land. Seeing that there was no way to get their vessels back on water, the captains decided to open a bar on the spot instead.

The Shelter of Fools is an underground bunker, supposedly shaped by the fae, which has withstood every eruption since the First Age. Superstitious folk believe it’s only a matter of time before it collapses under the weight of a lava flow and kills everyone hiding inside. And that’s how it got its name.

The Edenite Refinery has been rebuilt twice, but has remained untouched for a hundred years’ worth of eruptions since its last resurrection.

Conflagration is literally the perfect name for this town.

Thank you! I almost went with Conflagraton, as a play on the use of -ton as a place name suffix, but then decided against it.

But why do people stay there? Are they addicted to huffing volcanic gas?
