Pvt. Patriot Merrills
Private Patriot Merrills is a Karrnathi Army recruit who recieved basic training at Fort Zombie at the same time as the protagonists.
His father was Devil's Horns, a Karrnathi war hero famous for his exploits during the battle of Daskaran in Thrane. He feels extraordinary pressure to live up to his father's legend and is very scared of failure, but tries to put on a stoic façade to keep up appearances.
He was born in 987 in Thaliost, then a possession of Karrnath. His father died before his birth. The new commander of the Karrnathi forces occupying Thaliost gave Patriot and his mother Mona chambers in the castle, where they lived until Thrane took back Thaliost in 992. They fled for their lives and arrived in Rekkenmark, where they moved to a house gifted by the duchy of Dvorak, right outside of the army's officer school. Young officer aspirants often visited their home to hear Mona's stories of her husband and offer to give weapons training to young Patriot. The family essentially lived off donations from visitors.
Mona encouraged Patriot to enlist as soon as he turned 17, but he waited an extra year to build up the confidence to walk in his father's footsteps. Before he left, Mona had Devil's Horns' greatsword restored by the Rekkenmark blacksmith and put it in Patriot's luggage. Patriot hasn't taken the sword out of its box and uses the standard issue equipment instead, as he doesn't believe he has earned the right to use his father's sword.
He tried to stay as under the radar as possible during basic training. Although he is strong and a talented swordsman after spending most of his teenage years training under the officer aspirants visiting his home, he tried not to stand out to avoid being treated differently. After being assigned to Kovacs Duchy as part of the protagonists' party, he slowly came out of his shell, handily defeating the rest of his squad during their sparring session. However, he flatly refused the position of squad leader when Res voted for him, instead giving his vote to Charli.
