Varikkien (Va-ri-kien)

The Lash of Enlightenment

"In the tender caress of a blade, or the tight embrace of a chain, I find beauty. Like an artist with their brushes, I paint with shades of pain, each instrument a different hue, each scream a different stroke. Can you not see it? The raw, unadulterated purity of anguish. It is the most genuine of emotions, untouched by pretense or deceit. Every whip's crack, every bone's snap, is a symphony, a song of existence, of life and death intertwined. Come, dance with me in this canvas of suffering, and let me show you the sublime artistry of agony. For in pain, dear one, we find the truest form of ourselves."
Varikkien on Pain
Varikkien, The Lash of Enlightenment, is not a deity to be outwardly worshiped but rather intimately experienced. Her whispers are the siren's call to the broken, the lost, and the artistically inclined. She is pain personified, not as an act of sadism but as an art form, an intricate dance of suffering and clarity. Her allure is undeniable, for in her embrace, one finds both the depths of despair and the heights of ecstasy.

Divine Domains

Torture: As her title suggests, Varikkien's primary domain is torture. She embodies the physical, emotional, and psychological pain, believing that through enduring such agonies, a higher form of enlightenment and understanding can be achieved. The methods of torture under her domain are numerous, ranging from physical inflictions to the most intricate psychological manipulations.   Enlightenment: A paradoxical counterpart to her domain of torture, Varikkien believes in the potential for pain to elevate one's consciousness and provide deeper insights. This domain covers the revelations, clarity, and heightened awareness that can emerge from experiences of extreme suffering.   Desire: While not directly related to physical pain, the concept of yearning, craving, and lust plays a significant role in Varikkien's portfolio. This domain is centered around the irresistible allure of the forbidden, the seductive power of the unknown, and the human tendency to desire that which might ultimately lead to one's own destruction.

Artifacts

There is only one artifact in Varikkiens arsenal and that is the Lash of Lust. The Lash of Lust is not merely a weapon but a symbol of Varikkien's essence, intertwining the domains of Torture, Enlightenment, and Desire. Legend claims it was forged in the very moment Varikkien succumbed to Asmodues' whispers, capturing the raw energy of her transformation.
The Lash is a whip made from shadows that seem almost tangible, with ethereal flames dancing along its length. The handle is fashioned from polished bone, adorned with obsidian stones that resemble Varikkien's dark eyes. When moved, it emits a hauntingly melodic sound, reminiscent of a siren's call, beckoning those who hear it closer.
The Lash of Lust is not a tool that can be wielded by any. Only those who have deeply delved into the domains of Torture, Enlightenment, and Desire, proving themselves worthy, can hope to harness its power without being consumed by it. As such, it often resides in the inner sanctum of Varikkien's hidden temples, protected by her most devoted acolytes and sinister traps.
The mere mention of the Lash can inspire fear and desire. Many have sought it, lured by its promise of power and enlightenment, but few have ever glimpsed it. Its presence can turn the tides of battles, corrupt the most steadfast hearts, and reveal truths that can shatter empires. As the direct extension of Varikkien's will, it plays a pivotal role in her plans and machinations in the mortal realm.
The Lash of Lust is more than a mere artifact; it's a testament to Varikkien's dominion over the intertwined natures of pain and pleasure, the darkness of desire, and the blinding clarity that can come from the most unexpected sources

Holy Books & Codes

The followers of Varikkien, in their quest for enlightenment through pain and desire, devised an agonizing yet deeply symbolic method of preserving their goddess's teachings: by inscribing them onto the flesh of the devoted. These living tomes, known as The Tomes of Tormented Truths, are both worshipped and pitied. To become a Tome is to offer oneself entirely to Varikkien, enduring excruciating pain for the eternal preservation of her words.   Types of Tomes: There are three primary Tomes, each corresponding to one of Varikkien's domains: Torture, Enlightenment, and Desire.   Tome of Torment: These are followers who have willingly let their bodies be covered in intricate patterns of cuts, burns, and lashes, detailing methods of torture, rituals, and ceremonies. They often serve as high torturers in Varikkien's temples, their very presence a testament to their devotion and the agonizing lengths they'll go to in their goddess's name.   Tome of Enlightenment: Every word, every symbol etched into their flesh speaks of revelations achieved through pain and suffering. These are the philosophies, the meditations, and the truths revealed to those who've walked the fine line between agony and epiphany. They often serve as guides or mentors to those new to the faith or those seeking Varikkien's clarity.   Tome of Desire: Inscribed with tales of temptation, lust, and the power of will, these followers bear the intricate stories of those who've succumbed to or resisted Varikkien's temptations. They are the siren's call incarnate and are often involved in recruitment or temptation tasks, drawing more souls to the goddess's fold.   Process of Becoming a Tome: A follower chosen to become a Tome undergoes a rigorous ritual. It starts with days of fasting and meditation, followed by the ritualistic use of the Lash of Lust. The pain of the Lash is said to purify the soul, making it a worthy canvas. Once prepared, high priests, under the influence of Varikkien's whispers, meticulously inscribe her teachings onto the follower's flesh using a variety of agonizing methods.   Role in Varikkien's Worship: The Tomes of Tormented Truths aren't just repositories of knowledge; they're active participants in the rituals and ceremonies dedicated to Varikkien. They lead prayers, offer insights, and sometimes even offer their flesh for new inscriptions during significant events or revelations.   Being a Tome is both a blessing and a curse. While they're revered and their sacrifices acknowledged, their existence is a painful one, with every breath a reminder of their devotion and the weight of the truths they bear on their marred flesh.   Preservation: Given the importance of the Tomes, there are rituals to preserve their lifespan, slowing down their aging process. Additionally, when a Tome is nearing the end of their life, there are ceremonies to transfer the inscriptions – and hence the knowledge – onto a new, willing devotee, ensuring that Varikkien's words are never lost.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The Lash of Lusts is not merely a whip but a symbol of raw power, temptation, and resilience. Crafted from the shadowy tendrils of the Underworld and interwoven with ethereal flames from Varikkien's divine heart, the Lash is a juxtaposition of darkness and light. The whip’s handle is adorned with black obsidian, and at its very center, set like a gem, is a living, pulsating eye that seems to both beckon and judge those who look upon it. This eye is said to be a direct link to Varikkien herself, serving as her watchful gaze over the world.   While the Lash is known to grant its wielder tremendous endurance, it’s not just physical. The true power of the Lash is its ability to fortify the spirit, allowing the wielder to bear emotional and psychological torment that would break ordinary beings.   Endurance of the Damned: When invoking the Lash's power, the wielder can withstand agonizing pain, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. This resilience extends to a point where they can endure lethal blows and still press on, driven by a force beyond mortal comprehension.   Echo of Temptation: With a mere crack of the Lash, the wielder can make beings relive their most intense desires or fears. This can be used to control, manipulate, or even paralyze foes.   Seal of Suffering: The Lash can brand symbols onto beings or objects, marking them with Varikkien's essence. These marks might bring protection, curse, or serve as a conduit for Varikkien’s power.   Sparce Use: The Lash of Lusts, despite its immense power, is not brandished carelessly. Its presence alone signifies moments of profound consequence. Due to its potency, it's only invoked during ceremonies of extreme importance or situations demanding Varikkien's direct influence. Some of these might include:   Rituals of Ascension: When a new high priest or priestess is anointed, the Lash is used to mark them, sealing their bond with Varikkien.   Times of Great Despair: In situations where all hope seems lost, or the balance of power is at risk, the Lash may be summoned to tip the scales in favor of Varikkien's followers.   Final Judgments: When a betrayer or a great enemy is captured, the Lash might be used for their final judgment, deciding their fate in the hands of Varikkien's faithful.   Guardianship: Given its significance, the Lash of Lusts isn't left unprotected. It's often kept in the innermost sanctum of Varikkien’s primary temple, guarded by both physical defenses and intricate magical wards. Only the highest-ranking members of Varikkien’s clergy have access, and even then, the Lash is only taken out under specific, dire circumstances, or when directly commanded by the goddess herself.   In the eyes of the devoted, the Lash is more than just an artifact; it's a direct line to their goddess, a symbol of her presence, her power, and her favor. And in the hands of the faithful, it's a tool of both salvation and damnation.

Tenets of Faith

Endure:
"Every form of pain, be it physical, emotional, or spiritual, is a test of one's true mettle. To endure is to prove oneself worthy of Varikkien's favor."
Followers are taught that suffering is an inherent part of existence. Instead of shunning it, they should embrace and endure it. Pain is not a punishment but a rite of passage. The longer one can withstand torment, the purer and more devout they are believed to be. This tenet makes them resilient to the hardships of life, turning them into staunch and sometimes unyielding individuals, relentless in their pursuits.   Sacrifice:
"True devotion demands giving up something of value. This could be material possessions, personal ambitions, or even loved ones. In loss, one proves their loyalty to the divine."
Sacrifice teaches followers that to gain the goddess's favor, they must be willing to part with things that mean the most to them. This isn't always a literal loss; it could mean suppressing personal desires or forsaking personal happiness for the greater glory of Varikkien. It cements the idea that pain and loss are pathways to divine enlightenment, and nothing valuable comes without a cost.   Transcend:
"Beyond the realm of suffering lies the sweet relief of enlightenment. Only by navigating the treacherous terrains of pain and loss can one truly ascend to a state of supreme clarity and understanding."
This is the culmination of the previous tenets. After enduring pain and embracing sacrifice, followers believe they will reach a state of heightened awareness, where they understand the mysteries of the universe and Varikkien's true intentions. It is in this state that pain no longer affects them, not because it's absent, but because they've become one with it. This transcendence is the ultimate goal of every follower, to rise above mortal limitations and achieve a divine state of existence.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

The Singular Goal of Varikkien: "Lash the world, let the wound of the world stand agape and swallow us whole."
Interpretation: Varikkien's ultimate vision is not one of mere dominance or conquest, but of awakening the world to the truths she holds dear: that through pain, sacrifice, and endurance, one can transcend to unparalleled heights of enlightenment. Her goal is symbolic and literal in its depth, suggesting a world reshaped by her values.   Lash the world: This is the starting phase of her grand design. Varikkien wishes for the entire world to experience pain, not out of malice, but as a catalyst. Just as a lash prompts a reaction, this initial phase of global suffering would serve to shake every living being out of their complacency. It's a wake-up call, a challenge to the world to rise and face the trials she deems necessary for true enlightenment.   Let the wound of the world stand agape: After the initial shock and pain, the world would be left scarred, much like a wound that remains open. This symbolizes a period of vulnerability and reflection, where societies, cultures, and individuals reckon with the pain they've experienced. It's a time for them to question their beliefs, their values, and the very essence of their existence. The open wound signifies the tearing down of old structures and beliefs, making way for a new era.   And swallow us whole: The final phase of Varikkien's design is acceptance and transformation. Just as a wound eventually heals, leaving behind a scar as a testament to the endured pain, the world, after undergoing the trials set by Varikkien, would be reborn. To be swallowed whole suggests a complete immersion into Varikkien's doctrine. Societies would rebuild, not in avoidance of pain and suffering, but embracing and integrating them as vital components of growth and enlightenment.   In essence, Varikkien's ultimate goal is a cyclical journey of pain leading to understanding, destruction giving way to rebirth, and suffering as the path to transcendence.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Her hair turned a stark shade of silver, and her eyes became voids of pure obsidian. Crisscrossed with pale scars from her own tormented experiments, her skin now shines like polished marble. Her voice, however mellifluous, carries a cold and haunting undertone.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Once a revered priestess of the healing light, Lithanos, Varikkien's faith was shattered when her god was defeated by Asmodues. Her desperate quest for clarity was a tragic tale of temptation and descent. The Prince of Silver Tongues found her at her weakest, embedding thoughts of darkness and depravity into her mind. The lines between pain and pleasure blurred, leading Varikkien to believe that through suffering, one can achieve the truest form of clarity.
