The Gate

The Fifth Circle

“Be careful what you wish for, for like Mammon, you might just get it.”
- Qaithen Shra'el,
Realm Explorer

This domain is commonly thought a paradise by the mortal souls lured here, but nothing is precisely what it seems.
The temptations within its borders seek to awaken an interloper’s sense of greed. Gold is here, ingots and coins beyond counting. Precious stones are sunk deep into every wall, and gilded sculptures line every path. However to lay but a finger upon Mammon’s horde is to join it, your consciousness rendered immortal, but forever trapped in an immobile golden body. Lissome maidens walk the verdant fields, their face and form seemingly sprung from their heart's dearest desire. Yet to tryst with such a creature is the purest folly, for there are clawed hands and serpent's teeth beneath the glamour, and an appetite for fleshly pleasures of a different sort. Armies, their numbers so great as to blacken the plains, greet those of martial bent, whilst the politically minded are also met in kind, with nations to guide and vassals to rule. For any traveller with a desire for personal power within his or her heart, this is a paradise. Yet to tarry within this circle is to be overcome with paranoia, to see a dagger beneath every smile and poison in every chalice - the cheering throng becomes a tortuous and inescapable prison.

Mammon the blind, has been subjugated to all that this layer may endure. The layer was created by former Demon Kings as a way of protecting themselves from the strongest of foes and Mammon walked right into its awful trap. You become so beguiled with its diligence that you become its protector and adversely the Demon King's protector. It is also said that though Mammon is blind, he is the only one that truly sees this circle's appearance. Mammon has been told to describe that a motherly embrace and a sensation of warmth when he completes his task of protecting the layer. Physically Mammon describes the layer as a red goo-like substance that exhumes these feelings. He may never truly realise why he fights, but in this illusory euphoria, Mammon has become an impeccable fighter and protects the layer as though it was his own mother.
