Sandah

Sandah is a rather well-known checkpoint on the main trade route between the north and south sides of the Hades River. Still, it isn't too large of a city, and it is split in two--Norsandah and Sosandah--by the rift. Sandah is powerful in that it controls the trade route--there isn't another crossing point for at least three hours worth of travel in either direction--and, as such, it employs a heavy "army" that guards the city limits in droves. The city has no walls, so the patrols are tight. Travel across the river is free to residents, but costly for travelers. Norsandah and Sosandah are perfect mirror images of each other (this has led to a popular prank among young people where one or more drunk individuals will be taken across the river while blacked out and left there to see how long it takes them to figure out they're on the wrong side of the river). Sandah and its citizens overwhelmingly support the Rebellion against the Catholic Nation and have provided countless men and supplies to the army, leaving the city itself with an understaffed guardhouse and a dipping economy.

Demographics

Mostly human, although a smattering of half-elves, orcs, and dwarves live here as well. Many of these are merchants, as Sandah is a trading hub, and there are many sailors and mercenaries aboard the vessels that travel between city halves. There is also a disproportionately large number of guards patrolling the city limits.

Government

Sandah is ruled by a mayor, Mayor Gershwin, and a small council of seven. Laws on travel and trade are quite strict, while everything else is sort of added as a side note. There are dozens of pages of laws on how to adjust taxes on trade, while the section on murder essentially says "please try not to." Theft is as heavily punished as violence, as one's property is viewed as akin to one's life, and the laws regarding vandalism and theft are far more complex than those regarding violence and murder. Slavery, while a contested issue, is currently legal in Sandah.

Defences

Sandah employs a large contingent of guards the size of a small army. They mostly patrol the borders in heavily-armed vehicles, but there is no shortage of guards within the city itself.

Industry & Trade

Sandah makes most if its money from trade and travel costs. Taxes for outsiders are quite high and shipping costs are exorbitant, but it is the safest route across the river.

History

The people of Sandah are known for their strange dialect devoid of the letter "y." This is due to the people's rebellion against a tyrannical mayor some 93 years ago who used the letter as his personal seal. The dialect first started as a sort of code language used by the underground, but surged in popularity after the mayor was deposed in a violent revolution. The strange way of speaking evolved from simple lingo to a full-fledged dialect over the course of decades, and now everyone speaks that way. While it has fallen out of fashion to do so, some parents still name their children using names that begin or end with "y," but replacing it with other sounds (for example: Timmah).

Architecture

Sandah was built atop the ruins of another ancient city. The ruins have since been built upon and tidied up into mostly neat rectangles of concrete and aluminum. The city is shaped like two halves of a wheel, with the streets jutting out like spokes from the river.
