Military Remnants: Chernarus' Last Line of Defense

Written by Chickensky

Overview

The Military Remnants are a faction of former Chernorussian military personnel who survived the cataclysmic events that led to the downfall of The Republic of Chernarus. Committed to preserving what remains of their once-proud nation, these soldiers have taken it upon themselves to restore order and protect the remaining civilians from both external threats and internal chaos. Despite their diminished numbers and resources, the Military Remnants continue to uphold their duty, believing that their role is to defend the remnants of civilization at all costs.

Formation and History

The Military Remnants were born out of the chaos that followed the devastating Kry-Zok invasion and the subsequent widespread infestation. As Chernarus fell into disarray, the military struggled to maintain control. The rapid spread of the infestation and the collapse of central authority forced the military to adopt a defensive posture, focusing on protecting key locations rather than attempting to reclaim lost territory.   Amidst this crisis, a deep schism formed within the military ranks. A faction led by General Viktor "Iron Will" Sokolov, frustrated with what they perceived as the military’s indecisiveness and failure to take aggressive action against the infestation, broke away to form their own group—Iron Hand. Sokolov and his followers believed that only through overwhelming force and total military dominance could Chernarus be saved.   The remaining military forces, now referred to as the Military Remnants, were left to pick up the pieces. Led by Colonel Anya "Steelheart" Petrov, these soldiers rejected Sokolov’s vision of a militaristic state ruled by fear and instead remained loyal to the ideals of the Republic of Chernarus. They focused on defending civilians, securing safe zones, and preserving what little remained of Chernarussian society. Despite their best efforts, the Military Remnants found themselves increasingly outnumbered and outgunned as they faced not only the infestation but also the relentless expansion of Iron Hand.

Technological Arms Race: Exo-Skeletons vs. Prototype Energy Weapons

The conflict between the Military Remnants and Iron Hand reached a turning point with the development and deployment of advanced technologies by both factions, ensuring they remained on an even footing despite their ideological differences.   The exo-skeletons utilized by Iron Hand represent a pinnacle of pre-apocalyptic military technology. These suits provide enhanced strength, endurance, and protection to their wearers, making Iron Hand's elite units incredibly formidable on the battlefield. The exo-skeletons are a symbol of Iron Hand's philosophy of strength through overwhelming force. Only the most loyal and skilled soldiers within Iron Hand are equipped with these powerful suits, which allow them to dominate in direct combat.   In response to the threat posed by Iron Hand's exo-skeletons, the Military Remnants began to develop and deploy prototype energy weapons. These weapons, while still in an experimental phase, are capable of penetrating the advanced armor of the exo-skeletons, effectively neutralizing Iron Hand's technological advantage. The energy weapons are the result of desperate innovation, with the Military Remnants cobbling together what little technology and resources they have left to create a countermeasure to Iron Hand's dominance. Like the exo-skeletons, these weapons are reserved for the elite units of the Military Remnants, ensuring they have a fighting chance in their ongoing struggle.

Current Operations

The Military Remnants are primarily focused on holding strategic locations across Chernarus, including fortified bases, key infrastructure points, and small settlements. Their main objectives are to:

  • Protect Civilians: Safeguarding what remains of the civilian population is their top priority. The Remnants provide shelter, food, and medical care to those under their protection.
  •
  • Combat the Infestation: Despite their limited resources, the Military Remnants continue to fight the infestation, conducting raids to clear out heavily infested areas and prevent its spread.
  •
  • Counter Iron Hand: The Military Remnants are locked in a bitter conflict with Iron Hand. They view Sokolov’s faction as a grave threat to the ideals of freedom and democracy, fighting to prevent Iron Hand from seizing control of Chernarus and imposing their authoritarian rule. With the advent of their prototype energy weapons, the Military Remnants now have the means to directly challenge Iron Hand's technological superiority.

Organizational Structure

  • High Command: The Military Remnants are led by a council of senior officers who survived the initial collapse. This council is responsible for strategic decision-making and coordination of all remaining forces. Colonel Petrov, a key figure within the council, serves as the de facto leader, respected for her tactical acumen and empathy for her soldiers.
  •
  • Field Units: The Military Remnants are organized into several field units, each responsible for defending specific territories or carrying out particular missions. These units operate semi-autonomously, often adapting to the challenges of the post-apocalyptic environment with limited support from the central command.
  •
  • Civilian Defense Corps: To bolster their numbers, the Military Remnants have formed alliances with civilian groups, training volunteers to assist in defense operations. This corps serves as a vital supplement to the professional soldiers, helping to protect key locations and providing essential services such as medical aid and logistics.

Conflict with Iron Hand

The split between the Military Remnants and Iron Hand represents one of the most significant divisions within the remnants of the Chernorussian state. This conflict is driven by ideological differences as much as it is by a struggle for power and control:
  • Ideological Rift: The Military Remnants view Iron Hand’s vision of a militaristic, authoritarian state as a betrayal of The Republic of Chernarus’s core values. They believe in a more balanced approach, where military power is used to protect and rebuild, not to oppress.
  •
  • Tactical Skirmishes: The two factions frequently clash over territory and resources. While the Military Remnants are more defensive in nature, Iron Hand often launches aggressive offensives to seize control of strategic locations. With the introduction of exo-skeletons and energy weapons, these skirmishes have escalated in intensity, with both sides seeking to outmaneuver the other technologically.
  •
  • Public Perception: Among the scattered remnants of the civilian population, opinions are divided. Some see Iron Hand as a necessary force for order, while others rally behind the Military Remnants, hoping for a return to the ideals of the pre-war government.

Legacy and Future

The Military Remnants represent the last vestige of the Chernorussian military’s original mission to protect the nation and its people. Despite the overwhelming challenges they face, including the ever-present threat of the infestation and the relentless advance of Iron Hand, they continue to fight for a future where Chernarus can rise from the ashes of the apocalypse. The balance of power remains precarious, with the outcome of their conflict with Iron Hand likely to determine the future of the entire region. Whether they succeed in this mission, or are ultimately consumed by the forces arrayed against them, remains to be seen.
