I Alma
I Alma is the foremost site of learning and research in Eälendspar. It is primarily a magical university, but also offers education and research opportunities in many non-magical subjects. It was founded during the tumultuous post civil war era, as the elvish empire dissolved, around the library of a prestigious church of the god of magic and learning. The purpose was to give the nearby city an edge in establishing itself as a cultural power in the new world order, and has succeeded in this goal. I Alma is eäfamous for producing learned students, and attracts all curious people. The university operates at three educational levels. The first is grammar school education, which is very structured with traditional group classes. This primarily serves the children of the local nobility, and is the main way I Alma makes money. The next level is for ambitious students from around Eä. These students apply based on their previous academic work or ideas, and attend at varying prices, often while also working for the school. These students form a mentorship relationship with assigned tutors, and pursue their own interests, but this often takes the form of scheduling classes with particular researchers, often in a group setting. The final level is the researchers themselves, who work as a group or independently to discover new or lost knowledge. Culturally I Alma is famous for being highly progressive and for developing many of the schools of thought that differentiate modern city elves from their forbearers in the elven empire.
Demography and Population
Situated in the northern parts of City Elf territory, the vast majority of the population of I Alma is city elves. However, excluding the primary education students the demographics are much more diverse. The majority of students are City Elves as these are the most likely to have received some form of primary education, but wild elves and salt elves are also fairly common. Thorn Elves and Broken Elves are quite rare, as they must effectively cut ties with their home culture to attend this university but they do make up a portion of the student body and an even larger portion of the masters. The religious and conservative nature of dwarves makes them rare as well, but the close proximity means they are relatively more common. Recently New Men have begun to attend as well, and they now make up the 2nd most numerous group after city elves among the students, though are quite rare among the masters. New Men are attempting to develop similar institutions at home to compete.
