After the great evil had been slain and sealed many races returned home. Especially the longer-lived races that could still remember their home before they had been displaced or drafted into the war returned in great numbers. While this was initially welcomed by King Strovil Mithrilbrand IV of Du'merh as the kingdom had been lacking in good workings during the war it quickly turned differently when the workers wanted to mine the tunnels their family had mined before them.
During the war with the great evil, Strovil Mithrilbrand IV had in an attempt to keep the mines busy, and the economy afloat, ordered all the dwarves that had stayed behind to mine only the most promising veins and tunnels. To do this he had appropriated the tunnels of the dwarves that he had sent to war and taken them in by the state. So when the dwarves returned from the war once the great evil had been slain and sealed they saw a country that was a shell of its former glory. Patriotism was easy to instil in them, however, as they returned to the mines their forefathers before them had used, they were met with unfamiliar faces and in some cases soldiers barring the way as the king had taken the mine for himself. This did not go over well and soon protests and riots broke out in the kingdom that was still reeling from the war. The protests were mild at first but as demands were not met and the returned dwarves kept refusing to work, supported by the considerable wages from their efforts in the war, Strovil Mithrilbrand IV kept trying to escalate punishments. At first it was fines, when these were not paid prison or worse.
