The Silent Mountains
The silent mountains, so called due the eerie silence above the earth, is home to almost no animals and only the hardiest of plants which are able to survive the cold climates in this region. Inside the mountains dwarves have found plenty of gems and coal to heat up their expansive cities and thus creating environments suitable for plants and fungi which otherwise are not able to survive on the surface.
There are many speculations why Li'tenar does not extend the forest out to these mountains but it remains a mystery why this is one of the few places without any trees.
Fauna & Flora
Flora in this region is limited to hardy bushes and small types of grass. Few animals call these mountains their home although those that do are often adept at burrowing into ground or rock. The frequent winds and shallow layer of earth on top of the mountains prevent any larger trees or bushes from growing and even grass often find it difficult to survive the cold temperatures that happens every winter.
Despite these circumstances a single type of berry bush has been growing in small numbers on top of the mountains. The berries are, however, poisonous and eating them causes sweating to the point of drying out a body. Some religious groups have used this for self mummification in which devout practitioners will willingly eat a large quantity of the berries and then find a suitable spot to meditate until they die of thirst. Due to the cold there are no germs that break down the bodies and as such many places on the mountain look like congregations of monks in eternal meditation.
