Bhentcu Peasant Uprising

The Bhentcu Peasant Uprising was a Bhent rebellion against Khahlanong Hlusa Mfa that took place during the Years of Chaos. The mountainous terrain of Bhentcu and the deep-running cultural and community connections of the Bhents made the region exceedingly difficult for Khahlanong to integrate and control. Ultimately, the rebels were able to force Khahlanong to grant them autonomy, though the empire continued to claim their territory.   In 750 CE, the rebellion was sparked by the imposition of a labor draft that conscripted young men into a state workforce intended to repair the destruction caused by the War of Three Provinces that had ravaged Khahlanong. The Bhents, outraged by the draft coming when they were already hard-pressed to feed themselves due to heavy agricultural taxes imposed during the civil war, rose up against the provincial governor. They killed or drove out the noble landowners and established communal assemblies, called Ardhi Duaga.
