Quilted Poncho

Quilted Poncho is a Jani cultural garment made out of multiple elaborate embroidered quilt squares fashioned together into the shape of a Poncho. Originally made as a way to covertly convey and relay Jani culture (as featured in the myth of the Last Born Jani) but also as a symbol of peace, community and culture within the diaspora. Strikingly bright and elaborate the Quilted Poncho can come in many different forms, shapes, sizes and colours. Some families even pass down embroidery styles through the act of poncho creation.

Manufacturing process

Although the materials of a quilted Poncho can change and vary in what's available to those making it, the usual construction of one is of three main layers, the quilt top, the batting and the backing material. There is an emphasis on joining multiple different colours, patterns, or types of fabrics together to make each poncho unique. Alot of the fabrics in traditional Jani ponchos will be of great significance to them and chosen specifically because of their meaning. They could be recycled from their relative's ponchos, or be a fabric that was acquired a significant life event, such as birthdays, graduations or marriage.

Accessories and personal touches are also a large part of what makes a poncho special. Metal chains and ribbons are a very common accessory choice amongst Jani adults whilst bows or strings of charms or beads are most common amongst young Jani girls. Metalwork or small metal or woven embellishments have been found to be common amongst Jani men as a way to show off their prowess.

Some forest-dwelling Jani subcultures go further with variants of the Quilted Poncho also include dried petals and leaves woven into the fabric of the garment although the act of doing so requires replacement occasionally and thus is usually a temporary addition to the garment.

Significance

To the Jani, the Quilted Poncho is a symbol of the person who wears it / made it, their heritage, their interests, their journey. When a Jani dies, their poncho is deconstructed and distributed amongst their kin, the squares sown into newer Ponchos, as a living legacy.
