Mermaidic-Aquatic Transformation
Mermaidic-Aquatic Transformation is a transformation that occurs in Merfolk when exposed to sunlight. Their tails undergo a gradual 'drying out' phase that transforms said tails into appendages that are almost perfectly similar to the legs of a human. This transformation facilitates their ability to be amphibian (exist on both land and sea) although a great deal of specific care must be applied to allow for a Merfolk to live on the land long-term.
Manifestation
The Mermaidic-Aquatic transformation manifests itself visually as a changing of the Merfolk's legs from one fish-like tail into two equal appendages similar to a human's legs. It is a slow process, although it's speed can be affected by the heat or amount of solar exposure the tail is undergone, and it's speed can be adjusted by using various different potions and consumable items that can either slow or delay entirely, or speed-up the transformation to an almost instantaneous effect.
The prevention is true to the reverse as well, exposure to less sun or consumable items that delay or prevent the return to the Merfolk's base tailed-form, these prevention work in differing levels of effectiveness to each Merfolk's resistance's and tolerances. This knowledge has been most utilised amongst those who want to delay the transformation due to fears of Transformation Sickness or other such ill-effects that may occur due to this.
Localization
The Mermadic-Aquatic law of transformation is recognised as a racial feature of Namdia's native Merfolk population, and although visually-similar mechanics have been observed in other merfolk-like races such as the Oristellae's shape-shifting capabilities, the internal mechanisms are different as the shape-shifting for an Oristellae happens at will of the Oristellae themselves and the transformation of Merfolk happens whether the Merfolk wills it or not, as a simple natural consequence of exposure to sunlight.
Certain regiments and merfolk-based militia have devised ways to wield the transformation as a way to get the upper-hand it can give to both aquatic and terrestrial combat and has proven to be a decisive tie-breaker. A famous example being the Merian Amphiban Regiment of the Royal Merian Military who through a mix of ruthless training, selective recruitment and specialised secret consumables has managed to cultivate an army of fast-switching super-soldiers.
