Last Hitched Cart

The Last Hitched Cart is a symbolic traveling cart left in the middle of the NuJania town square as a testament to the resilient spirit of the Jani and the coalescence of all their work to protect their culture and preserve relations between generations. Upon the stones of the floor where it has been hitched into concrete reads the last paragraph of the Pamphlet of Peace, the foundational document that started the movement to create NuJania.

On remembrance days the Last Hitched Cart becomes adorned with Quilted Ponchos, Traveler's Bread, and numerous different types of flower arrangements. The Ponchos to display those who were lost, while many of the ponchos became the Cart's canvas, additional ponchos are laid out on remembrance days so people may view them and families may lay their bread (a symbol of travel and good company) on top of it, and any additional flowers. Colour is especially important to the Jani and thus Traveler's Bread used in funeral rites and remembrance may come in various colours and dyed visages to create a brightly-tinted mosaic that works both as a sobering moment, community monument, and (rather controversially amongst NuJanians) a tourist attraction.

Tourism Controversy

There has been some recent debate over whether people coming out to see the remembrance rites for tourism benefit should really be in attendance or if the tourism causes the cultural significance to be watered down and lessens the meaning. However, Barbara, leader of NuJania believes that if one were to start gatekeeping or choose who is allowed to attend such events there would be no difference between NuJania and what it worked to fight against.
