Zagyg
Zagig Yragerne
Zagig Yragerne is a figure of legend and paradox—at once a mortal archmage, a divine being, a genius builder, and a wild-eyed trickster. Once the Lord Mayor of the Free City of Greyhawk and later an ascended demigod known as Zagyg, he embodies both the boundless potential and the chaotic folly of arcane ambition.
A visionary archmage and architect of chaos, Zagig’s life was a riddle wrapped in magic—one that continues to echo through the world long after his ascent to divine madness.

Personal history
Born to obscurity but destined for greatness, Zagig rose to prominence through sheer brilliance and a reckless thirst for magical knowledge. In his mortal years, he served as Greyhawk’s most eccentric and visionary mayor, transforming the city into a thriving center of learning, magic, and trade. His crowning achievement was the construction of Castle Greyhawk—an impossibly vast, shifting, and often nonsensical dungeon said to contain everything from ancient artifacts to imprisoned deities. Part fortress, part cosmic joke, it stands as a lasting symbol of Zagig’s mind: deep, convoluted, and impossible to fully understand.
Zagig’s rule was marked by genius innovation and chaotic governance. He implemented reforms with dazzling effectiveness one day and vanished for weeks the next. His behavior grew increasingly erratic over time, earning him the title "Mad Archmage"—though whether his madness was genuine or merely a cover for greater schemes remains a matter of debate
Zagig was one of the founding members of the Company of Seven, a fellowship of powerful adventurers who traveled the planes and shaped the fate of the world through their exploits. Even among such company, Zagig was notable for his unpredictable brilliance and his relentless curiosity about reality itself. His peers respected his power, feared his temper, and often found themselves unwilling participants in his strange magical experiments.
Zagig's ultimate ambition was not mere mastery of magic—it was to transcend mortality. Through years of secret rituals, planar pacts, and one infamous act of divine imprisonment, he achieved his goal. After successfully capturing and studying a deity, he unlocked the path to apotheosis and ascended to the divine realm, taking the name Zagyg. He is now recognized as a demigod of eccentricity, unpredictable magic, and humor within the court of Boccob, the Uncaring Lord of All Magic.
Even as a god, Zagyg is no less cryptic. His followers—typically madmen, illusionists, and unconventional wizards—revere him as a patron of oddities, riddles, and the breaking of rules in pursuit of higher truths.
Zagig left behind more questions than answers. His magical creations still roam the world; his castle continues to defy understanding; and his influence ripples through every corner of the magical arts. To study Zagig is to embrace paradox: a man who wielded chaos like a scalpel, who built wonders with madness, and who laughed all the way into divinity.
