Company of Seven

The Company of Seven was a legendary band of adventurers who roamed the Flanaess centuries ago, during a formative era in the history of the world. Their exploits, though partially obscured by time and myth, laid the foundation for many of the magical, political, and historical forces that shape the present age. Revered by scholars and spellcasters alike, the Company of Seven is remembered not only for their heroism, but for their deep influence on magic, exploration, and the balance of power across the realms.

Structure

While the full roster is debated among historians, the most commonly accepted members of the Company of Seven include:

Mordenkainen (human, archmage)

Founder and philosophical leader of the group. Even in his early days, Mordenkainen was concerned with the balance of cosmic forces and sought to understand and shape events from a higher perspective. He was the Company’s strategist and visionary.

Bigby (human, wizard)

Once a loyal apprentice of Mordenkainen, Bigby became a powerful spellcaster in his own right, known for his signature "hand" spells and tactical mind. He remained a lifelong ally of Mordenkainen and a key figure in magical circles.

Zagig Yragerne (human, wizard/archmage)

The eccentric and unpredictable wizard who would later become Zagyg, the mad demigod of humor, unpredictability, and eccentricity. As Lord Mayor of Greyhawk and creator of Castle Greyhawk, his involvement in the Company was critical to many early explorations of planar and divine mysteries.

Keoghtom (human or demigod, alchemist-healer)

A renowned alchemist and sage, credited with creating the legendary Keoghtom’s Ointment and other potent restorative items. Some tales suggest Keoghtom transcended mortality and still walks the world in disguise.

Heward (human or demigod, bard/inventor)

A gifted musician and magical artisan, Heward is said to have crafted numerous magical instruments and objects, such as Heward’s Handy Haversack. In some legends, he’s the son of a god and acts as a patron of creative magic and invention.

Tuerney the Merciless (human, wizard)

A figure of great magical power and ambition, often depicted as colder and more ruthless than his companions. His title reflects his pragmatism and unflinching resolve, though some scholars debate whether he turned to darker paths in later years.

Murlynd (human, paladin/wizard)

Perhaps the most enigmatic of the group, Murlynd is remembered for combining martial prowess with magical innovation—and for his bizarre fascination with technology and aesthetics from other worlds. Often depicted wearing a wide-brimmed hat and wielding firearms, he eventually ascended to demigod status.

History

The Company of Seven was founded by Mordenkainen, the famed archmage who would later go on to form the Circle of Eight. At the time, the Flanaess was emerging from chaos: empires were rising, ancient evils were stirring, and vast regions of wilderness remained unexplored. Mordenkainen gathered a select group of powerful individuals—each possessing unique talents and philosophies—to confront the arcane, extraplanar, and existential threats that endangered the balance of the world.

Unlike many adventuring bands motivated by treasure or glory, the Company was guided by a deeper purpose: preserving cosmic balance and combating powers that could tip the scales of good and evil, law and chaos.

The Company of Seven disbanded after a few decades of activity, but their influence reverberates across the Flanaess and beyond:

  • Artifacts and magic items bearing their names still circulate among sages and adventurers.
  • Mordenkainen’s later formation of the Circle of Eight grew directly from the philosophical foundations of the Company.
  • Several members—Murlynd, Keoghtom, Heward, and Zagyg—are now revered as quasi-deities or powerful immortals, guiding specific aspects of mortal endeavor.

Though their original battles are largely lost to time, the Company of Seven is remembered as a band of visionaries and champions who dared to challenge the forces that threatened the world—not just for gold or glory, but for the preservation of reality itself.

Their legend remains a source of inspiration for those who walk the path of knowledge, balance, and extraordinary purpose.
