Temple of the Radiant Sun
Rising in golden splendor amidst the tree-lined avenues and marble fountains of the Garden Quarter, the Temple of the Radiant Sun is one of Greyhawk’s most awe-inspiring and revered holy sites. Dedicated to Pelor, god of the sun, healing, and righteousness, the temple stands as a beacon of hope, compassion, and divine strength—both spiritually and architecturally.
This temple is not only a place of worship, but also a center for charity, healing, and civic duty, drawing pilgrims, clergy, and the faithful from across the Flanaess.
Clergy and Leadership
- High Illuminant Carthis Alendor, the temple’s spiritual leader, is a noble-born priest known for his radiant presence, deep humility, and fiery sermons against injustice. Tall, golden-haired, and clad in robes of white and gold, he is both healer and crusader—a living embodiment of Pelor’s mercy and wrath.
- Sister Mayra Denthil, a former adventurer turned healer, oversees the temple’s charitable programs. Known for her pragmatic kindness and unmatched healing ability, she is beloved by the city’s poor.
- Dawnshield Seron Vlast, a paladin captain stationed at the temple, leads a small cadre of holy warriors who protect the grounds, escort the vulnerable, and intervene in times of civic strife.
The Temple of the Radiant Sun is not merely a house of worship—it is a pillar of light within Greyhawk, a place where compassion meets strength, and hope is kindled anew each dawn. Its presence anchors the Garden Quarter in both beauty and moral clarity, reminding all who pass its shining halls that, no matter how dark the world may become, the light will always return.
Purpose / Function
The Temple of the Radiant Sun offers a wide array of services to the city and its citizens, including:
- Healing and restoration, from minor ailments to powerful divine cures, offered daily by ordained clerics and paladins.
- Orphan and poor relief, with food kitchens, clean shelter, and sponsored apprenticeships for the city’s most vulnerable.
- Public blessings and morning sun-prayers, attended by both commoners and nobility seeking Pelor’s favor.
- Training and education for young acolytes, healers, and aspiring paladins.
- Sanctuary and refuge, as the temple grounds are considered sacred and politically neutral.
Holy days and solar festivals often see parades of light, music, and feasts that spill into the Garden Quarter and draw celebrants from across the city.
The Temple of the Radiant Sun holds significant moral and cultural influence within Greyhawk. While it avoids direct political entanglement, its public stance on justice, healing, and the defense of the weak makes it a respected voice in city affairs.
It often collaborates with clerics of Heironeous, Rao, and Saint Cuthbert, especially when divine cooperation is needed for crises or major threats. However, it sometimes finds itself at odds with more militant or dogmatic orders when mercy is mistaken for weakness.
Architecture
The Temple of the Radiant Sun is a masterwork of celestial design, built from pale gold-veined marble that gleams with a soft glow in daylight and a gentle radiance at night. The main structure features arched colonnades, open-air prayer gardens, and a magnificent central dome topped by a golden sunburst spire that catches the morning light like fire.
Inside, the Great Hall of Light is a vast, sunlit chamber with high vaulted ceilings and polished stone floors that reflect the stained-glass windows—each depicting scenes of Pelor’s mercy, triumphs over darkness, and the healing of the wounded. At the far end stands the Altar of the Zenith, carved from sunstone and always bathed in natural light at noon by a perfectly aligned oculus in the dome above.
Even the air seems warmer within the temple’s walls, touched by sacred energy and the scent of fresh-cut flowers and holy incense.
History
- Some say the temple’s dome was blessed by Pelor himself, and that standing beneath its noonlight can reveal truths hidden from mortal eyes.
- A hidden solar sanctum, accessible only during the summer solstice, is rumored to contain ancient relics of light and prophecies meant for times of great darkness.
- Whispers among the faithful tell of a shadow cult that once tried to defile the altar with a false eclipse—but was cast into the light and destroyed by a flare of divine fire.
