Grossettgrottell
Grossettgrottell is a bustling, subterranean gnome settlement hidden deep within the rocky hills south of the Abbor-Alz mountains, not far from the northern edge of the Gnarley Forest. It lies beneath a wooded ridge and is rarely seen by outsiders—save for trusted traders and the occasional adventurer with good intentions (and better manners).
Grossettgrottell is a living expression of gnomish ingenuity—part mining town, part magical laboratory, part whimsical haven. It is a place of warmth, invention, and subtle magic, with a deep-rooted caution beneath its cheerful surface. Whether you're after rare gems, clever gadgets, or glimpses of the Underdark's edge, Grossettgrottell is a hidden gem of the Flanaess.
Demographics
Grossettgrottell is not grand in the dwarven style, but rather intimate, ingenious, and full of personality. The tunnels are smoothly carved and often embedded with glowing crystals, bioluminescent moss, or clever illusion-lights that change hue with the time of day. Laughter, music, and the rhythmic sound of hammering or gearwork echo through the passages.
- Culture: Gnomes here are cheerful, curious, and proud of their craft. Innovation and storytelling are cornerstones of daily life. Every gnome contributes—whether by mining, crafting, brewing, foraging, or entertaining.
- Language: Gnomes often speak in a rapid dialect full of metaphors, mechanical jargon, and underground slang. Outsiders may need a translator—or patience.
Government
Governed by the Council of Cogs, a rotating council of gnome elders, artisans, and engineers who meet in the central chamber of Tinkerhall.
Defences
Though cheerful, the gnomes of Grossettgrottell are not naïve. The settlement is protected by:
- Trap corridors: Winding tunnels rigged with illusions, pit traps, and automated guardians.
- Stoneguard: A disciplined militia of gnome warriors armed with enchanted picks, slings, and mechanical crossbows.
- Tinkermage sentinels: Mages who specialize in blending illusion, elemental magic, and mechanical constructs.
The outermost tunnels are patrolled by scouts and monitored by cleverly hidden lenses and speaking tubes that alert the guards.
Industry & Trade
Primary Exports: Gemstones, rare minerals, alchemical reagents, intricately crafted tools, and clockwork novelties.
Districts
1. Tinkerhall:
The heart of Grossettgrottell, a domed chamber where inventions are displayed, council meets are held, and festivals are celebrated. The walls are covered in mosaics made from gem-chips and polished stone, depicting scenes from gnome lore.
2. The Gemveins:
Working tunnels filled with active mining shafts. A system of clever carts, chutes, and elevators connects the deeper levels. Guardians known as "burrow wardens" watch for threats like cave-ins or monstrous intrusions.
3. The Mushroom Warrens:
A spongy cavern of cultivated fungi, glowing molds, and edible mosses. Tended by gnome foragers and mycologists, the warrens provide both food and reagents for potions and dyes.
4. Glimmershade Hollow:
A quieter, enchanted cavern where gnome illusionists and sages practice their arts. Strange lights and dreamlike music drift from the hollow at all hours. Rumors speak of a hidden door leading to a pocket realm or fey-touched glade.
5. The Crankmarket:
A noisy, crowded bazaar where goods are bartered, new inventions demonstrated, and visiting surface traders are hosted (under watchful eye). Here one might buy a spring-loaded grappling hook, a self-stirring pot, or a rare alchemical tincture.
Architecture
A labyrinth of worked tunnels, cozy chambers, forge-halls, and natural caverns enhanced with subtle magic and clever engineering.
