Mekkisir

Mekkisir is a coastal city in western Zandrazil. The northernmost member of the Aubergine League, the walled city provides the league access to the fertile Inamja River Delta while also protecting the lands to the south from incursions from the Emerald Hunters, Tidefang Clan, and Voldrak Empire to the north. It is the oldest Dwarven settlement in Zandrazil.

Defences

Mekkisir's wall is approximately 200 meters tall and made of durable Dwarven marble imported from Hjarlheim, Mekkisir's sister city to the south. It is topped by several watch towers which provide the city's defenders with an excellent view of the Ruuldalai Sea to the west, and each tower is equipped specialized dwarven ballistae intended to ward off assaults from both sea and sky.

The undercity is accessible from the harbor districts via a 20-meter tall portcullis built into the southern half of the wall. The gate is made from adamantine and can be raised or lowered at a moment's notice. Citizens of the outer districts are instructed to flee to the undercity in the event of an attack, after which the gate will be lowered, creating an impenetrable fortress of adamantine and Dwarven marble.

The wall has a failsafe that can be activated in order to open the floodgates, releasing the reservoir to flood the lowlands to the west. While this has never been used, it is meant as a last resort to prevent invaders from attacking the city via the western coast. Many residents of the western districts have petitioned the city's government to disable the failsafe, fearing that by some accident or act of malice, someone could drown the entirety of the western districts with the flip of a switch.

Infrastructure

Mekkisir is best known for its western wall which extends from the northern bank of the Inamja River to the Ryjoor Cliffs to the south of the city. The northern half of the wall serves as a dam fording the Inamja River at its delta, creating a reservoir of fresh water that provides clean water, steam power, and plumbing to Mekkisir. The water is diverted through the undercity via aqueducts that redirect the flow of water to the city's external western districts, providing irrigation for the city's farmland.

Districts

Clifftop District

The Clifftop District located at the foot of Mount Drekton originally served as the farmlands which fed the city of Mekkisir beneath the mountain. Prior to the Sundering, the waters of the Inamja River naturally flowed through the district, providing easy access to irrigation. While Mekkisir survived the earthquakes and tectonic shifts that accompanied the Sundering, the cataclysm rerouted the Inamja River to the north and forced the citizens of Mekkisir to construct the city's great outer wall, which in turn moved the water flow to the newly-created Western Lowlands. The Clifftop District was changed to a trade hub for the city, as it is the easiest part of the city to access for merchants arriving from the north and south. Many travelers who visit Mekkisir spend the majority of their stay in the Clifftop District without ever venturing to another part of the city. This part of the city is dominated by inns, taverns, brothels, theaters, and other entertainment venues. Many merchants rent out property in the Clifftop District or set up shop in the Opal Bazaar in the eastern part of the district. The Clifftop District is also home to the city's violet brigade contingent, housing the city's barracks and aerie, as well as temples dedicated to non-Dwarven deities imported through trade with other members of the Aubergine League.

Undhammar

Undhammar is the oldest part of Mekkisir and is considered by its residents to be the city proper of Mekkisir. The fortress city was originally carved out of the surrounding rock by the Dwarves during the Dracomachy and served for centuries as the seat of power for lords of the Great Dwarven Empire appointed by the Dwarven Emperor to govern the Zandrazil lowlands. Most of the city's residents live in this district, as does the Doge, who resides in what was once the Stonelord's Keep during the reign of the Dwarven Empire. Many of the city's most important buildings are located in this district, including the Temple of the Allfather, the Library of the Keeper, and the Great Forge. The Undhammar is also home to most of the city's guildhalls, as all of the city's masons, artisans, and other craftsmen reside in this part of the city.
