Parents are abusive and neglectful due to chronic drug and alcohol addiction.

Motivation
Marcus's main motivation is to help his older brother provide for their siblings. Because their parents are never home or strung out when they are, the household chores and child rearing has fallen on their young shoulders.

Marcus is always clean and put together. Even though his clothing is second hand, it is always clean because he learned to wash and dry laundry at a young age.
