Darnus

Darnus stared apprehensively at the river as is wound its way through the crystallized muck black rice fields. The river had began its daily reversal and started slowing minute by long minute.Darnus remembered the low sawing tones of his Morning Guide as the guide expounded on waters natural attraction to Novus and the tidal cloging that created. Darnus snapped out of his reverie by the gentle stirring of the dawn air as it licked his face sending an icy shiver down his spine and reminding him of the depth of grandfather night's bone shivering cold.
As he lifted his foot up above the frozen mud, the dyed plum purple shag cloth of his morninghood rucksack tapped against his back egging him on, as if daring him to step out over the frozen rice flats and leave his family behind. After twenty four cycles he desperately felt himself a man, even if his squeaky voice might not always agree. Darnus stood at the edge of the mudflat his foot half raised ready to strike out, yet something in his chest kept tugging him back towards the crackling hearths of his families manor.
