The Kingdom of DeVere
Skye is the name of the world. This Kingdom is called DeVere. It is rule by a hereditary monarch, King Sa, in the capital city of Marino.
DeVere is bounded on three sides by high mountain ranges, and on the south by the ocean. The Tawndire Fjord defines the western edge, running roughly from Stark Mountain in the north, to the sea at Marino. Along the north wall are the Feldspar Mountains. In the northeast is a high plateau that includes Carfeld Lake and the Mud Pot Forest. Along the southeast are the Red Rock Hills, which transform into the Lapis Mountains along the sea coast, extending just west of Caper City.
Tenpin Lake is a vast lake at the center of the kingdom. Flowing south out of the lake is the Big Shally, which slices Holler Canyon through the Lapis Mountains on the way to the sea. The two lakes feeding into Tenpin are the Coal River in the east and the Little Shally in the west.
After the Fog is set in the Dearworth Valley, which follows the curve of the Little Shally north, between Tenpin and Sharing.
The Highlands and parts east are high-elevation farmlands, dotted with mesas and mountain peaks. They were formed as the continent drifted west over a vast magma plume. The geothermal activity of the upper Coal River is evidence of the plume’s location today.
The Fog
Throughout the ages, a thick, rolling fog has risen and receded throughout the world. The fog isn’t poisonous, but when thick enough it chokes out all sunlight and with it, any reason for a city to live.
The level of the fog is not strictly based on altitude. Fog is heavier than air, and moves like water, pooling in valleys and running down hills. It finds a natural level based on the ambient temperature, the moisture level in the ground, weather patterns, air pressure, etc. In other words, while it basically pools in lowlands and stays clear of highlands, that’s only one of several variables that dictates where the fog settles.
Fog is thicker in the winter and thinner in the summer, goes through seasons and tides, and is sometimes blown around by heavy winds. Plants and animals have adapted to it, and so have the people of Skye, slowly relocating their cities when they become unlivable.
As a general rule, cities survive when they have some geographic advantage that keeps them fog-clear. In the Dearworth Valley, for example, Tenpin is high up and near the lakeshore. Sharing is high in the windy mountains. Willough, Weterbranch, Loughre, Dowery, Curty, Auger, etc. are higher in the hills.
