A noblewoman from Alder, Lorissa Verdent is a master of many trades: sword fighting, dancing, brewing, and gunsmithing.   The Verdent family is known throughout the Dearworth Valley for their masterwork in the brewer’s trade. The ales, wines, and spirits of Alder are, at least to hear them tell it, the greatest in the world. The Arentio Masque distillery in Gee Alder, with its familiar charade masque label, brews unusual and delectable spirits from every manner of fruit and vegetable.   Lorissa Verdent spent much of her youth in High Alder, a Cachet City that was built to become the new seat of Alder’s noble families. But the construction of High Alder was somewhat premature, as the fog failed to rise and Alder remained in the clear.   Over the years, the fog receded, and High Alder stopped growing. The young Berona spent her youth in a tiny, artificial world, cut off from reality.   Her parents were overprotective but later realized and regretted it. When Lorissa rejoined Alder society as a young adult, she was drawn into more than one confidence scheme. But though she was naive, Lorissa learned quickly. She matured into a street-wise rogue, comfortable in both the high and low cities, and jumping between them like a duenderon.   Lorissa now has a deep love for both her families, including those uncouth friends who walk in the low city, and she is fiercely defensive of the independence of Dearworth. As the Powers of Marino move into the region with their grasping hands, Lorissa crafts shadow armies to fight them, and to preserve the independence of the Hook River Valley.
