A young adventurer from Newth, Derique Faulk (rhymes with "dough") has always loved exploring in deep fog. While the rest of his family yearned to move to high ground in Alder, Derique was constantly exploring the depths of the gray in Newth and Cais, and the forgotten lands south of the Little Shally.
Faulk now heads up a small team of treasure-seekers that includes a farmer (Petra Galena), a miner (Josin Caprel), an engineer (Taw Belue), and a Curian white whisperer called Jol. This ragtag crew scour the deep fog for artifacts and treasures, and they have a vast incidental knowledge of local history.
As the fog clears, Faulk and his band discover older and more mysterious stuff, and they have also helped dozens of families return to their ancestral homes, from Goughy to Sulifast, Egar to Stone Cais.
Faulk’s preservation of ancient city artifacts and records has helped many local families prevail in territorial disputes, often to the chagrin of the expansionist city masters, who prefer to treat every ruined city as a free salvage operation.
As the Dearworth resettlement efforts grow more ambitious, Faulk and his crew have come under ever more scrutiny from the Lords of Sharing and Tenpin. But Faulk is not one to back away from a fight. He now rallies those same families he has aided to join in his cause, as he becomes a shadow player in the resettlement of the Valley, and begins to rise into legendary status.
Some of his admirers regard this process as a return of the Few, as Faulk becomes a “Robin Hood” of the Dearworth Valley. But if they knew him, they’d change their minds. He’s just a swaggering goofball with a kind heart.
